REPORTS
Vesper (Antonio): Deputy (Eilis): Thanks to everyone who sent in reports for this meeting.
Note: if Vesper makes an announcement in Court, please make sure that recognitions, etc. are included in the Court report. See further details under Golem’s report.
Her Excellency Eliška is doing a Symposium on sealing documents planned for Beltane. Antonio and Aasa will both be in attendance.
Reminder from Golem that ‘Acting’ Seawolf, Sable Swan, etc. have to be proclaimed as ‘Sable Swan Pursuivant’ by Vesper to officially take over the role. Victoria of Durham is thus anointed as Sable Swan Pursuivant by Vesper. Moira of Kent is also thus anointed as Seawolf Pursuivant.
Vesper Principal Herald offers unto Aasa Thorvaldsdottir the title of Herald Extraordinary, to be affirmed in court at Spring Crown.
Heraldic / SCA wills - Na’arah, Aasa, and Antonio are going to work on a project to publish information to the West populace in the near future about what a Heraldic Will is and how to register one.
Seawolf (Moira): Their Highnesses have submitted several new awards to Principality/Kingdom Seneschals and Their Majesties for approval. These awards all have their basis in current Mists awards or awards existing in the Kingdom and/or other Principalities. The ceremonies for these new awards will likewise have their basis in currently existing ceremonies.
The fully de-gendered ceremony book for the Principality will be completed prior to Spring Coronet on March 31, 2023. The revised book will be returned to Golem Herald for publication once the new awards are approved and the new ceremonies are added.
Sable Swan (Victoria): She is working with a new herald to be warranted. Because of weather and travel concerns, Their Highnesses have not been over the hill to events in the past couple of months. The Cynaguan Ceremony Book is going through another round of degendering and approvals.
Stellanordica (Catriona): Eskalya passed their herald office from Verica of Lighthaven to Isabella Hawke. Stellanordica is learning how to get the new herald properly rostered - they are learning together.
After she learns the roster process, Catriona will also be updating Selviergard's herald info: Astridr is planning to pass the office to Myrra of Selviergard, a relative newcomer. Rodrigo dei Reinosa has graciously agreed to help mentor, as he is local to the new herald.
Winter's Gate is well-handled by Anne FitzRichard.
Astridr will be continuing in the role of Wolfhound (consulting) Herald for Oertha.
Their Highnesses have been traveling, and Catriona hasn’t been with them, and Her Highness is planning to work with local heralds for court as needed (since Stellanordica isn't always with them!)
The Principality doesn't have another event scheduled until July (Coronet); local events continue.
Exchequer (Damir): Successor (Heinreich): The College remains solvent. Damir will be working on the Q1 report next month once the bank statements are received. He needs to confer with Vesper and Sir Heinrich to update the transition schedule for this office.
Matins (Edith): Deputies (Ruadrí and Sieglinde): New forms! There are now fillable PDFs and updated non-fillable PDFs available for use. Watch for upcoming changes to the West Heralds Submissions page. The rest of the submissions process continues to roll through.
Green Crown (Damir, stunt deputy Eilis): Special thanks to Moira of Kent for handling West Court at Gulf Wars. Damir is conferring with Their Majesties in anticipation of Crown next weekend. Court heralds will be needed and we currently have 4 elevations over the weekend. He’s also pleased to report that Gillian Trenowith has expressed interest in becoming deputy successor for this office in anticipation of Damir stepping down in 2024.
Baldric (training deputy): Vesper is running training as a College-wide program, not assigned to a specific individual at this time.
Brachet (vacant).
Green Cloak (Alizan): No report received.
Green Trumpet (Gwenhwyfaer): No Kingdom events have been held since the last meeting. She intends to be present at Spring Crown.
Green Banner (Aasa): Aasa has continued to do a lot of consultation online. She is working with someone who may become a new name herald. Green Banner will be at Spring Crown with the Consultation Table.
Golem (Hirsch): Golem has been busier than normal.
There was an issue with at least one court report not making it to the royalty, because the Kingdom IT team had updated the email forwarding (which they should do) – this was done quicker than expected, and the outgoing royalty didn’t receive one of their court reports. This brought in Vesper, the Kingdom Seneschal, and the Chronicler (who oversees the web team, which Golem didn’t realize), and we had a call to talk about procedures. The new procedure is basically this:
Then, the host server updated the main programming language used for the Awards List (and History) websites. This caused some of the code to break in places, which was … irritating at best. (The issue has to deal with them tightening the way some of the code works on their side, but in the process it caused errors that are odd, at best.) This included the email program used for various forms (award recommendations, court reports, and more), and at least some award recommendations didn’t go through. Once notified of that issue, Golem went in and was able to fix the problem quickly. However, Golem is still finding places with lesser-used parts of the sites that produce errors, if you see one, please notify Golem with the details in the error message.
Golem taught an online class February 28, nominally for Allyshia, but available to anyone who wanted
to attend (we had one attendee from Meridies) on Being a Court Herald. The notes, and a video
(2 hours) are available on the Class Handouts page of the Heralds site:
https://heralds.westkingdom.org/ClassHandouts/index.php
It was well attended, and people seemed to feel that they got a lot out of it,
at least from the comments and thanks Golem got after. (And the notes for the class have been updated
from questions, so that if Golem teaches the class again, they will be incorporated.)
And one last issue that came up – a couple of items were not put into a court report by one of
the heralds from 12th Night (no finger pointing). This was discovered recently by Vesper and Golem,
and Golem submitted an auxiliary court report (although the royalty at the time were possibly headed
to or at Gulf Wars). There is a page on the Awards List site that may not be well known, but
any Court Herald should check out – Regional Notes:
https://heralds.westkingdom.org/Awards/forms/Court_RegionalNotes.php
This page includes details on awards that have specific requirements for the Court Report,
and information about items that the herald may not get before court and the need to get them after
court (A&S competition winners, Muckin’ Great Club, etc.). “Regional” refers to Kingdom, each of
the Principalities, and some of the Baronies.

Device:
Purpure, six roses Or barbed vert seeded argent, on a chief engrailed Or five triquetra purpure.
This is the second resubmission to the West of device for Yrsa.
The first submission was returned by the SCA CoA:
Vert, in fess a bear statant erect sable and an ash tree eradicated argent,
returned on the August 2021 LoAR with the comments:
This device is returned for lack of documentation supporting a sable bear and an argent tree as co-primaries on a vert field. While an IAP for a sable bear on a color field has been demonstrated in the past, SENA A4B says, "The overall design of the submission must be similar to the types of designs that document the use of the non-core style elements. In general, examples must match the submission in style and complexity." Therefore, documentation must also be provided to justify the inclusion of, in this case, the argent tree. Unfortunately, the documentation provided did not satisfy that requirement.
The resubmission addressed the reasons for the return.
The resubmission was returned by the West College:
Per pale argent and vert, a bear salient sable and an ash tree eradicated argent,
returned by the West College at the Sept 2022 meeting with the comments:
This must be returned due to the appearance of marshaling with the use of a simple pale line. If the pale line is complex, the following would be a conflict:
Ingrid Bjørnsdottir, Device, Ansteorra, 06/2018, Per pale embattled argent and gules, a bear rampant sable and a tree blasted and eradicated argent.
The newest submission addresses all of the above.
Per pale sable and vert, in fess an ash tree eradicated between two bears salient addorsed argent.
