REPORTS
Vesper (Damir): The Rostering process is moving forward. Crown was very successful, many people served as heralds. He is now planning to work through scrolls that were handed over to him with the office.
Seawolf (Moira): Mists Fall Coronet was held Saturday, September 7. They had a significant number of volunteers for both field and court heralding, to the extent that not everyone who was interested was able to herald.
Special commendations from Coronet to:
Elewys Gwynne, who not only served as a Field Herald and a Court Herald, but when the Rapier Field she was heralding split, ran two Fields at once and then trained another Field Herald on the fly until Moira could send another Herald to the Field
Xiomara Socorro Hibarguen de Guadalupe, said trainee, who jumped right in when there was a need
Rabbit Hunter, first time Field Herald, who was immediately able to be heard from one end of the field to the other
Moss of Little Marsden, who continued to take incoming Court business and work it into the schedule when Moira was called away by other responsibilities.
Skinner of Storyteller Keep, Her Highness’ Court Herald, who continues to do a fantastic job with whatever is thrown at her
Everyone working the Lists table, who made sure Seawolf knew where they were in the tournament and allowed her plenty of time to research the arms of the combatants and consorts.
Moira has a possible successor for SeaWolf Herald.
Sable Swan (Victoria): Getting ready for next month’s Coronet. The Principality is looking at the trailer this weekend, and will let her know if the Principality Heralds Point pavilion can be fitted in, which would assist her in finding a successor.
Sable Swan is looking for a successor.
Stellanordica (Catriona), Successor (Anne): Things are rolling along. Courts have been held, most reports have come in (or are in process), and everyone’s working their way through things. Catriona had a great time at the Herald's Collegium (or senior staff retreat, really...) and appreciated all the effort that went into it.
Anne FitzRichard has agreed to take over Stellanordica, timing of hand-off TBD.
In Eskalya, they lost their Baronial herald, Lena of Eskalya. Her deputy, Skye Ó Dubhda (aka Scath Ros, or Stacye of Eskalya) is interested in the position and Stellanordica will be working with her.
In Selviergard, Lyneya of the Burnt Wood had been the baronial officer, but due to officer changes at Coronet, wound up handing the office to Ceara inghean ui Beirichtir, who is mentoring Freya of Selviergard in the position (Freya is not old enough to officially hold an office).
In Winter's Gate, Talorc is serving temporarily as herald, but Anne FitzRichard plans to take the job back soon.
Their Highnesses have been holding courts and recognizing populace with awards; Stellanordica has assisted with some courts but is as always grateful to the stand-in efforts of their local heralds who serve them when she has not been available.
Stellanordica would like to commend Freya of Selviergard for doing excellent work as a field and court herald. They are still learning, but Catriona thinks they are doing a great job and really seem to be enjoying it.
Exchequer (Moira of Kent): The College remains solvent. Our account with the College of Arms will need to be replenished as this is a large LoI, and will use up all of the pre-paid funds. Moira is in the process of arranging to get a check signed.
Matins (Edith): Note that this month’s submissions include those that were worked on and paid for at Pennsic. Many thanks to the submitters, ALL of the fees were received for this month, there are no administrative returns!
Matins has a general request to the heralds of the West: please provide more assistance in reviewing name submissions on the LoIs. For many years, Astrith has provided the vast majority, working all the submissions for every LoI, but this is not sustainable indefinitely and is not a reasonable expectation to put on a single person. Any assistance is appreciated. Items that need to be reviewed: do URLs work and reference the name/documentation for the submission match? If the name formation documentation is not provided, is this available in SENA or another documentable source? If documentation is missing or incomplete, are we able to provide better? Are there any rules violations in the name? Are there any conflicts for the name? Assistance on these can be provided as heralds are able: it is NOT required that a single herald check all names on an LoI for all possible questions.
If anyone is interested in taking on more of this, but would like to ask questions or request training, please reach out to Matins. If anyone is interested in working on documentation for names, please reach out to Matins regarding digital copies of sources.
Baldric (training deputy): Vesper is running training as a College-wide program, not assigned to a specific individual at this time.
Brachet (vacant), Leveret (Ræv).: No report at this time.
Green Cloak (Alizan): Heraldry happened at Crown. Master Edward stood in with Alizan’s thanks. An amazing 21 volunteers signed up to herald at Crown, including His Highness Roric who was the very first volunteer. Heralds Point was re-waterproofed this summer, which made an amazing difference in the downpours of Purgatorio.
Many thanks to Master Johann for recommending the product used to waterproof the canvas.
Green Cloak is looking for a successor. Thinking about ways to make the job more appealing: are there options that would remove the requirement for transporting Heralds Point? This has been a sticking point with possible successors.
Green Crown (Eilis): At Purgatorio, Eilis passed Vesper to Damir and took Green Crown until Moira can pass Seawolf. At Purgatorio and at Fall Crown, all Courts of Their Majesties were staffed and all reports have been submitted and confirmed. Eilis did no courts at Crown, and did not arrange staffing due to special circumstances. She thanks Damir and Moira, who covered for her. Eilis will be at Great Western War and will manage Their Majesties' court heraldic needs there.
Green Trumpet (Gwenhwyfaer): Green Trumpet attended Purgatorio and Fall Crown and provided services to the Crown and Populace of the West.
Purgatorio was WET. It was also very small in size and attendance. Early morning announcements were the only ones scheduled. Everything else was simply done from in front of the Royal Pavilion. Thanks to Turstan and Prince Roric, who made the morning announcements.
Fall Crown was a much larger affair with many more attendees with a larger territory to cover and many heralds rose to the task.
Special thanks to:
Turstan - did Morning Shout on Saturday at Purgatorio.
Prince Roric Darkinson - did Morning Shout on Sunday at Purgatorio.
Mercy Grym - did Morning Shout on Saturday at Crown.
Caoilinn Rose Maddox - shared Morning Shout on Saturday and did Morning Shout on Sunday at Crown.
Ruidri - this gentle has done work for us in the past year as a duty shout herald. Along with Virgile (below), they did most of the announcements throughout the day at Crown.
Virgile de la Fuente – Green Trumpet thinks this was their first time as a duty shout herald. Along with Ruidri (above), they did most of the announcements throughout the day at Crown.
Alexei - Gwenhwyfaer believes this was their first time as a duty shout herald. They did an afternoon shout on Saturday at Crown.
Other volunteers as needed - she is sure we had other voice needs filled by volunteers at these events and wishes to commend everyone who volunteered their time.
Green Banner (Aasa): Green Banner and the Consultation Table have been busy these last few months. In addition to ongoing online consultations, Aasa brought the table to Montaigne du Roi Summer Revel, Purgatorio, Mists Coronet, and Fall Crown. She has signed up for several shifts at the GWW consultation table. She plans to be at Cynagua Coronet and anticipates bringing the table to more Cynaguan events in general. We continue to see an influx of newcomers, many of whom were brought in by Her Highness Hannah, and Aasa continues to push her "Heraldry Is For Everyone" agenda.
Green Banner will be unable to attend this meeting (September) and the next (November) due to GSP rehearsal, but will be back starting at 12th Night.
The new boxes for the library are working well, being easy to carry and stack, transparent, and having easily secured lids.
Golem (Hirsch): This last couple of months have been fairly busy, partly because there have been a lot of events, and therefore a lot of court reports to process. However, the court reports are coming in pretty regularly and all is good on that front. The Royalty have been good at confirming the reports. The heralds have been working hard to not get corrections sent in his replies (He think it’s becoming a competition …).
A couple new awards from Purgatorio meant a little extra work, the fun one being the Order of the Bards of the West, making sure Hirsch got the end of a bard’s first tenure (several have done the job more than once), and so on. Ensuring award ceremonies are matching the laws defining them, or vice versa, has been interesting, and we have some minor stuff being looked at, at the moment.
Otherwise, well, Golem is looking at the fact that, at 67 years of age, he’s not immortal. Health is still currently good, but it is time to really start pushing harder than has been done in the past to find trainees to learn the jobs that Golem does. This job could easily be broken down into parts – the Award List, Ceremonies, the Web site … and honestly could maybe be broken down further, but those are the ones that jump out at him as the primary areas. (Some interfacing with the History site, for example …) Each element of what he does is not huge, it just looks that way from the outside. The award list has a front-end for the “administrator”, and it is rare that anyone (unless they had good reason) would need to delve into the code, or even modify the tables themselves, for example.
Golem, at the request of Vesper, put together some routines for the award list to output information to CSV files (which can be read into Excel or Google Sheets, and other software that understands the format) for those who like to work with the information for statistical or other purposes. These aren’t the reasons Vesper requested them, but it seemed like Hirsch might as well make it possible for others to use (there are folk who do statistics on peerages, how many per reign, and other things more complicated, for example). Also as Vesper put out the roster letters this week, a little fine-tuning of the roster letter as it is generated got done, when he noticed some oddities (such as the individual who was the Darkwood Pinnacle herald living in Southern Shores, showing “Pinnacle Pursuivant for Southern Shores” – oops).

The previously registered: Argent, an escallop inverted azure, and a bordure azure semy of escallops inverted argent is to be released upon registration.
The previous submission was returned at the Kingdom level for conflict in April 2008.
Azure, a pall between three roses argent.
The West requests that this submission be considered, even though it is in conflict
with the following:
Ailith ferch Dafydd’s device registered in March of 1988 (via Ansteorra):
Azure, a pall between a Celtic cross and two unicorns combatant argent.
and
Rognvaldr Arason’s device registered in May of 2019 (via Atlantia):
Azure, a pall between a fret couped and two wolf's heads erased addorsed argent.
What follows is the reasoning behind the request for consideration:
Ailith and Rognvaldr’s devices are not in conflict with each other due to a DC for the change of type of secondary charges, and then a second DC for the Change of Posture of Animate Charges: the wolf’s heads are addorsed and the unicorns are combatant, so they are facing in different directions (SENA A5.G.7.a).
Christy’s submission also receives the DC for the change of type of secondary charges but does not earn a second DC under the current rules.
Per SENA, roses are considered a compact inanimate charge and so do not have an orientation (A5.E.5.b). Further, their orientation cannot be compared to animate charge orientations, as inanimate and animate orientations are defined by different rules.
The West College questions how “Azure, a pall between three roses argent” is LESS DIFFERENT from the two following than “Azure, a pall between a Celtic cross and two unicorns combatant argent” is to “Azure, a pall between a fret couped and two wolf’s heads erased addorsed argent” and submits that this device is AT LEAST as different if not more so. First, the charges are considered so different from each other that their orientations CANNOT be compared, rather than close enough that they HAVE to be compared to grant a difference and further that this submission has a matching group of three secondary charges compared to the other two that both have a group of one and two charges in the secondary charge group.
Aside from the rules listed above that currently define Christy’s submission as less different, the West also notes that visually the secondary charges on all three devices are very different from each other.
Thank you for taking the time to review this request.

filia - from the same source, the Latin relationship word “filia” meaning “daughter of” can be used to form a name.
