REPORTS
Vesper (Eilis): We finally have a transition plan. Vesper will turn over to Damir at Purgatorio. Moira of Kent will take over as Exchequer and Green Crown. Eilis found a Deputy for Matins, and is still looking for Green Cloak.
Update on regalia creation to replace ones that were lost: Norse apron panel for King side is almost done, Queen’s side Norse apron panel is in-process. She hopes to have them ready to be presented at June Crown. Two beautifully embroidered patches were given to the College for King and Queen side heralds baldrics, they are beautiful and much thanks to the creator (please provide name if you have it).
Seawolf (Moira): Moira is continuing the search for a successor, as she is now scheduled to take on a new position at Purgatorio Coronation. A "recruitment notice" was first posted on Facebook in March, has been published in The Page, starting with the June issue, and will be re-posted on Facebook. She has a potential temporary successor, but they can not commit to a full two-year term.
Spring Investiture was held on May 18, and was a lot of fun for all. She would like to thank Leah Raedaelf of Pagham and Leon von Schrecken for serving as Consort's Side Heralds for the Final Court of Alaric and Sorcha and the First Court of Kean and Hannah respectively.
The primary theme of Kean and Hannah's reign is Heraldry. They are encouraging the populace (starting with their retinue) to create and register personal heraldry, then display that heraldry whenever possible.
Special commendation to Skinner of Storyteller Keep, first-time Herald, who at Her Highness Hannah's request was Her Herald for Investiture Court. She is relatively new to the Society, and is interested in continuing to herald.
She will be adding two ceremonies to the Ceremony Book.
Their Highnesses Kean and Hannah have created a new order: The Keystone of the Mists. This order is for Principality Greater and Lesser Officers who serve at least one complete two-year term, and who are not otherwise inducted into an order on stepping down from their office. The premier of the Order is Antei Kikaku, who stepped down as Webminister yesterday. The ceremony will be included in the next revision of the Ceremony Book, but will be added temporarily until that time.
His Majesty Conor declared that the Principalities are granted the right to award the WOLF to those furry companions they deem worthy. I will be adding the WOLF ceremony to the Book temporarily, until such time as the Kingdom Law is revised to make that right permanent.
Their new Highnesses Mists are encouraging much heraldry in Their Principality.
Moira continues to serve as a Deputy to the Vesper Principal Herald for the purpose of verifying and sealing scrolls. This was a significant task during the previous reign, as there were many scrolls awarded.
Sable Swan (Victoria): Sable Swan is searching for a successor.
Getting ready for Coronet next weekend, please watch for requests for volunteers. The revisions for the Cynaguan Ceremony book are in her worklist but have been delayed by life. Victoria is considering publishing the partially-revised Book.
Stellanordica (Catriona): To the best of her knowledge, Oerthan court reports are all caught up - with many thanks to the diligence of Master Hirsch for his reminders and editing!
Their Highnesses and various Excellencies have continued recognizing folks at events, and holding courts, and the local heralds have been stepping in to cover Their Highnesses as needed; Catriona has missed events lately due to life and am grateful for these volunteers! (and thanks also to the Baronial heralds for their services to the Excellencies!)
Oertha will be hosting June Crown next month, and will be supporting Kingdom staff with courts and shouts as needed. Damir kindly reminded her to print updated copies of the Kingdom books, so those will be fresh and ready - traveling heralds won't *have* to bring books up if you don't want to.
The next Principality event will be Coronet & Investiture in July, which should go as normal.
There is a set of Oerthan law changes in the works, mostly to do some clean-up of award names and to update some officer information; this has been approved by everyone, but will need to be read in court. Catriona will coordinate with the Seneschal to see when this will happen (if it didn’t already!). Once official, she'll finish the cleanup of Oertha's ceremony books.
Catriona knows of one Oerthan with a name submission sent in, but others may be in the queue - only one of them came through her, but she knows folks often just go through consulting heralds.
Exchequer (Damir): Successor (Moira of Kent): The college remains solvent and our account with the college of arms is current. Knowledge transfer to his deputy/successor is underway and we are just awaiting finalization of her exchequer warrant. Transition effective date: hopefully June Crown.
Matins (Edith), Deputy-in-training (Catherine): Matins is excited to report a new deputy in training: a recent transplant from Atlantia, Lady Catherine Ambrose has started working with Matins to train on the current procedures. Lady Catherine served as submissions herald for Atlantia a few years ago, and both she and Matins are enjoying sharing a passion for heraldic submissions.
The submissions process continues to run. This month's reminder for consulting heralds is to provide full name documentation, including documentation (remember, websites that are NOT a no-copy-source require images) and name formation notes, when working with submitters on a name.
Request for heralds meeting dates for 2025 be considered for publication and addition to the Kingdom calendar.
Baldric (training deputy): Vesper is running training as a College-wide program, not assigned to a specific individual at this time.
Brachet (vacant).
Green Cloak (Alizan): Green Cloak is seeking a successor, please contact Vesper.
Field heraldry happened to spite the weather at Spring Crown and Beltane Coronation. While she is still having trouble getting sign-ins, people are volunteering.
Moira O'C and Eilis assisted with obtaining devices at Crown, and Moira O'C and Anne FitzRichard will be running point for June Crown in Oertha. The format for Spring Crown created numerous headaches and miscommunications: special thanks to Edward Le Kervere for soldiering through what amounted to 5 or 6 rounds.
They heralded the rapier tournament at Beltane: conflicting messages there created confusion. They need to discuss roles and responsibilities with the Lists Minister, as there was some over-stepping on her part.
Heralds Point (the pavilion) is no longer waterproof or water-resistant. It was recommended to her that a waterproofer be sprayed on to the fabric, details in an expense request.
The College’s Financial Committee approves this expense on this day (5/19/2024).
Green Crown (Damir), Successor (Moira of Kent): The rain can't keep us quiet! His sincere thanks to heralds who assisted with courts at Beltane in sub-optimal conditions. All court reports have been filed and affirmed. At Mists Investiture yesterday, His Majesty announced his intention to make the Western Order of Loyal Friends (W.O.L.F.) available to the Princes and Princesses of the West for bestow. We'll keep an eye out for this to be done via paperwork and will coordinate with Vesper and Golem as needed. He will not be at June Crown but will work with our Oerthan colleagues to ensure coverage for courts. He will be stepping down and passing this office effective Purgatorio AS59.
Green Trumpet (Gwenhwyfaer): Activities did occur at March Crown and Beltane. Viscountess Caiolinn handled the office at March Crown quite well, in Gwenhwyfaer’s absence. Thanks to Carrik, Richard Talbot, Ghislaine, Caiolinn who all worked at Beltane. She would like to establish a set time for volunteers to show up at heralds point at the Kingdom events.
Green Banner (Aasa): Consultation Table was present and fairly busy at Spring Crown and Beltane. Due to the rain at Beltane, it was much less formal (and less stationary) and the library stayed safely in her car, but several consultations started there have been continued online. Fully online consultations are also ongoing.
Upcoming events that Aasa plans to bring the Consultation Table to include Cynagua Coronet.
Aasa identified a couple of newcomers who are interested in becoming book heralds, which is exciting! She is also undertaking to get training for the brand new Rivenoak herald, who is very eager to learn, but completely untrained and out of his depth. She requests the assistance of the rest of the College in this.
Golem (Hirsch): Golem has been working with Green Crown and others on ceremony updates in attempts to make some things more clear, and in a couple cases to deal with missed “gender neutral” text issues.
Court Reports got oddly broken due to an old bug that hadn’t been hit before, where the code to generate the roman numeral SCA year tried to determine how to display 9 – IX. Odd bug, easy to fix. Sometimes the strangest little things happen. That said, court reports are coming in, getting them confirmed by Royalty is sometimes interesting … but they are getting done.
The Heraldry 101 classes are complete, most of the videos (at the time he wrote this) are up, and the notes/PowerPoint slides are available for all six lessons on the Heralds’ website (Class Handouts). The classes went well, the small number of attendees seemed to enjoy them, and get something out of them. Golem notes that the videos have been watched since the classes by more people than attended.

SUBMISSONS – May (2024)
ITEMS SENT TO LAURELCatrin Aderyn (New Household Name sent to Laurel)
New Household Name: Caergarthen
The submitter marked they will NOT accept any changes to the name, but has later confirmed they will accept <Caer garthen>, splitting the parts of the name with a space in between, if required. The submitter requests the previously registered badge Lozengy vert and Or, a chief embattled argent be associated with the name upon registration.
Caer- is a Welsh household name designator found in “A Collection of Welsh Household Names from 1602” by Countess Aryanhwy merch Catmael modernly known as Sara L. Uckelman: under the header caer: Welsh meaning ‘fort, stronghold, fortified estate” Caeryvallen, p.11 [https://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/welsh/household-names].
-garthen - found as a place name suffix in The Place-names of Cardiganshire, Part 3 by Iwan Wmffre. P.1028 under the header Rhyd Rhiwgarthenni and p.1204 under the header Cilgarthen [https://www.google.com/books/edition/The_Place_names_of_Cardiganshire/VoZnAAAAMAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&bsq=carthen].
Aryanhwy's article, cited for <Caer->, also lists <garth> as a second element, from English. She notes that dithemic names combining Welsh and English were rare but did exist. <garth> is listed with a star, as are others, but the author does not explain what the star means. Aryhanwy's article lists one name that includes <-garthan> with two "a"s: <Gogarthan>.
Per Aryanhwy's and Tangwystyl's articles, the name formation <prototheme + deutorotheme> is correct for Welsh households.
Ceara of Morven (New Name sent to Laurel)
The submitter cares about the sound (shorter simpler name. In order of preference, Scotts, Irish Gaelic, or Welsh. Prefer later period/early modern) and gender (female), but will accept gender-neutral for the name.
Ceara – from O'Corrain & Maguire in "Irish Names" [NCS] p. 50 state that it is the name of three virgin saints.
And from NCS Academy of St Gabriel Report 2106 "The Gaelic name <Cera> is found in early medieval Irish records, before 1200 [O'Corrain & Maguire]. Gaelic spelling underwent a change around the year 1200, and this name was spelled <Ceara> in the later system. However, we're not sure the name remained in use after 1200, so we recommend you focus on an earlier period if you want to use this name." [https://www.panix.com/~gabriel/public-bin/showfinal.cgi/2106.txt]
Morven/Morvern is a place-name derived from Mor-Bhearn. Discussed in 2009 paper by A. Jennings and A. Kruse, One coast - three peoples: names and ethnicity in the Scottish west during the early Viking period: [https://pureadmin.uhi.ac.uk/ws/portalfiles/portal/1049609/One_coast_three_peoples_1_Final.pdf]. (Which further cites Watson, W.J., 1926: The Celtic Place-Names of Scotland. Edinburgh.) Note that some records show this name as <Morvern> with a second <r>.
Also “The history of the Celtic place-names of Scotland, being the Rhind lectures on archaeology (expanded) delivered in 1916” by William J. Watson book, p.123 “Morvern itself is badly spelled Morven on maps; in Gaelic it is A’ Mhorbhairn, gen. na Morbhairne ; a poem of the sixteenth century has san Mhorbhairn, ‘in Morvern’ ; in the next century the nominative is written an Mor- bhairni”
This is in the public domain in the USA and is available at [https://archive.org/details/historyofcelticp0000unse/page/n17/mode/2up].
Per SENA, Appendix C, Old, Middle, and Modern English are all compatible with Gaelic.
The English name formation <given name + of + byname> is acceptable per SENA, Appendix A.
Evren Ankaravi (New Name Change sent to Laurel)
The previously registered Kelsy Aylesworth is to be retained as an alternate.
The submitter will NOT accept any changes.
Evren - from “Onomatican Turcicum, Turkic Personal Names” as collected by Laszlo Rasonyi: under the header Evren, 15th C., multiple instances, p.262.
Ankaravi - the Turkish form for "person from Ankara" is Ankaravi - based on “The Biographical Encyclopedia of Islamic Philosophy” [https://www.google.com/books/edition/The_Biographical_Encyclopedia_of_Islamic/2wS2CAAAQBAJ] lists an early 17th century figure Isma'il Ankaravi. It looks like this particular byname is used either before or after the given name, so either Evren Ankaravi or Ankaravi Evren.
The West College requests assistance documenting the name formation.
Gwenhwyvar MacColgan (New Name and Device sent to Laurel)
The submitter cares about the sound (none noted) and the gender (female) of the name.
Gwenhwyvar appears with two attestations in the article "Women's Names in the First Half of 16th Century Wales" by Tangwystyl verch Morgant Glasvryn (Heather Rose Jones) [http://heraldry.sca.org/names/welshfem16/given.html].
MacColgan appears as the family name of Donell m'Colgan MacColgan in the list of pardons of people in “Inishowen in the Province of Ulster dating to 1602” and compiled in the Appendix to the 18th Report of the Deputy Keeper of the Public Records in Ireland and provided in the list of “Names Found in Anglicized Irish Documents: Men's Names” by Mari ingen Briain meic Donnchada (Kathleen M. O'Brien), available at [http://medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnglicizedIrish/Masculine.shtml].
The name pattern of [Feminine Given Name] + [Family Name] for women of Gaelic families in 16th century Ireland is attested to in “Names Found in Anglicized Irish Documents” by Mari ingen Briain meic Donnchada (Kathleen M. O'Brien), [http://medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnglicizedIrish/]. May also be permitted under Appendix A of SENA if "clan affiliation/name" is understood to include family name as described by O'Brien.
The combination of Welsh and Irish names in the early 16th century is permitted under Appendix C of SENA.
The elements of the name are within the 300 year span required by SENA rule PN2.C.2.b.

Per chevron inverted rayonny Or and purpure, a phoenix purpure.
Hirsch von Henford (New Household Name sent to Laurel)

The submitter will NOT accept any changes to the name and cares about the gender (neutral) of the name. The badge: (Fieldless) Two stag's heads erased addorsed and conjoined at the neck Or registered January 2004 is to be associated with this name upon registration.
Household name formed using <tincture + charge + designator> as per Alys’ Simple Guide to Household Names [https://heraldry.sca.org/names/households.html].
Documentation for using <Players> as a designator for a group name: from REED Online, Hampshire, Southampton, 1561–2, Steward's Accounts, Southampton City Archives: SC5/1/43: “oxfordes players”, “my Lorde of arronndelles players”, “the duches of suffokes players” [https://ereed.library.utoronto.ca/records/hamps-ridp226679680/?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR2dvZNjI308MBrCVeygwWXM8mSx6oFEyH3-dEsZOndWkzySKmDqGyF0LDk_aem_AYb_HN2D6Aedq0EAL8ZGLXkCWjgS-2kqUhelAgXvlAj-yQ8EQBF_xBlxcw-5Lpnrr-bI_qWnk24vmWQBhf6fDwgk].
Katerina de Faie (New Badge sent to Laurel)
(Fieldless) On a tankard azure, a musical note Or.
Marobodua Brigiani (Resub Name and Device sent to Laurel)
The submitter had a name returned on the June 2014 LoAR:
Name: Marocatha Bodua Brigiani. Comments summarized: the name was returned for lack of documentation of double-given names in Gaulish, for the use of the name of a goddess with no documentation of its use for normal humans, and for confusion of the gender of the name elements. This new submission is a rework of the name.
The submitter will accept the following changes: correct construction for gender and use of an ethnonym for the second name. The submitter also requests AUTHENTICITY for: Gaulish or Brittonic of c. 200 BCE-200CE. The submitter will accept female or neutral as the gender.
Marobodua is feminized from an attested male name Maroboduus (also attested as Maroboduos). The submitter is happy for the gender construction to be corrected, it can be feminine or neutral, whichever is easier to form and register.

Brigiani is an ethnonym of an attested tribe, listed on the Tropaeum Alpeum monument celebrating Roman conquest of the Alpine tribes. Submitter is unclear on the exact proper construction of the ethnonym and is happy for this to be corrected so that the name means “Marobodua of the Brigiani”.

The West College requests assistance documenting the Gaulish name formation <given + locative/tribe>.
Device:
The submitter had a device returned on the June 2014 LoAR:
Device: Per pale gules and sable, a raven displayed argent between in pale two plates charged with triskelions of spirals. Returned for containing two steps from period practice (now termed steps from core practice): one for the use of the charge <triskelion of spirals> and a second for the use of a non-eagle bird in the displayed posture.
The resubmission is almost identical to the original, but a non-eagle bird displayed is no longer considered a step from core practice.
Per pale gules and sable, a raven displayed argent between in pale two plates, each charged with a triskelion of spirals within and conjoined to an annulet sable.
There is a step from core practice for the use of the charge <triskelion of spirals>, as per Precedent most recently upheld per the Sept 2023 LoAR under the registration for Anauved de Mona.
Mícheál Bruigad (New Name Change, Household Name, Badge sent to Laurel)
The previously registered Mícheál Ó Foghladha will be retained as an alternate.
The submitter will accept the following changes: spelling of the words, and cares about the meaning (pre 1300 Ireland) and gender (male) of the name. The submitter also requests AUTHENTICITY for: pre 1300 Ireland.
Mícheál - previously registered given name.
Bruigad - from in the Dictionary of the Irish Language (http://www.dil.ie/), it looks like the correct form of the name would be "Mícheál Briugad" or "Mícheál ṁBriuga" [https://dil.ie/search?q=briugu&search_in=headword].
In The Death-Tales of the Ulster Heroes, in Gaelic, by Kuno Meyer, p, 24, the spelling used is <briuga>, uncapitalized. [https://archive.org/details/deathtalesofulst00meye/page/n3/mode/1up].
Historical documentation of men filling the same role are found historically in the Ulster saga (Blai Briugu) meaning the hospitaller or landholder. [https://celt.ucc.ie/published/T301037.html] This documentation is for an English translation, so it documents "hospitaller", but not the Gaelic spelling.
Household name: Bruden Míchíl (bruiden of Michil)
The submitter will accept the following changes: spelling of the words, and cares about the meaning (pre 1300 Ireland) and gender (male) of the name.
The correct form of the household name would be "Bruden Míchíl" [https://dil.ie/search?search_in=headword&q=1%20bruiden].
Bruden – from NCS O'Sullivan as: "The guesthouse (teach n-oiged)" or hostel (bruiden) 20 in which the hospitaller dispensed hospitality unreservedly to his guests was the seat of his livelihood, and any evidence regarding this establishment is a vital component to understanding fully the hospitaller's function in medieval Irish society." (O'Sullivan, C.M. Hospitality in medieval Ireland 900-1500, Four courts press, 2004).
See also The Destruction of Dá Derga’s Hostel: “Bruden Dá Derga” [https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/The_Destruction_of_D%C3%A1_Derga%E2%80%99s_Hostel].
The header is <bruiden>, but the commonest form appears to be <bruden>.
Míchíl - per the Irish Grammar Database, the genitive form of <Micheál> is <Michíl> or <an Mhichíl>. [https://www.teanglann.ie/en/gram/Miche%C3%A1l]
Name formation: to date, the designators identified for Gaelic households are <Clann> (clan), <luchd taighe> (household), and <teaghlach> (household). [http://medievalscotland.org/scotnames/households.shtml]. To register this name, the use of <bruden> (hostel) for a household name will need to be approved.
Badge:

Transfer of Arms from the Princess of the Mists to the Principality of the Mists: Argent, a crown within a rose leaf wreath vert, all within a bordure engrailed azure, semé of roses argent. Signed by Hannah Storyteller, Princess of the Mists.
Acceptance of both Transfers signed by Their Highnesses of the Mists as follows:
Acceptance of transfer of the Sovereign's arms as a Branch device to be used by the Sovereign of the Mists, who is further requested to be listed as the secondary owner (similar to the registration of the West Kingdom’s arms).
Acceptance of transfer of the Consort’s Arms as a Branch badge to be used by the Consort of the Mists, who is further requested to be listed as the secondary owner (similar to the registration of the West Kingdom’s badge for the Queen). Additionally, the following commentary relating to the emblazon and blazon of this badge: While blazoned as a rose leaf wreath, the wreath on these arms has been drawn as a laurel wreath since the original submission and in fact was originally described as a laurel wreath on that submission before being edited to say rose leaf wreath. We leave it to the College of Arms to decide whether to reblazon the arms for accuracy or to preserve the interesting historical curiosity of the Society's only rose leaf wreath.
New Order: Order of the Keystone of the Mists
The submitter will NOT accept any changes.
Formed using the pattern established in SENA Appendix E.2.b: Order of the <Heraldic Charge> of the <Branch Name>.

Niall de Exeter (New Name Change sent to Laurel)
The previously registered Niell Mac Nyven is to be released upon registration.
The submitter will accept the following changes: d’Exeter, and cares about the gender (male) of the name.
Niall - from NCS Woulfe: Niall, p. 45.
de Exeter - At Our Irish Heritage, there are three articles that mention a person by the name of <de Exeter>: [https://www.ouririshheritage.org/content/archive/place/miscellaneous-place/rathfran-abbey-ruins], [https://www.ouririshheritage.org/content/archive/place/miscellaneous-place/ballylahan-castle] (specifically mentions Jordan De Exeter), and [https://www.ouririshheritage.org/content/archive/place/miscellaneous-place/the-early-history-of-the-priory-of-the-holy-cross] (specifically mentions Jordan De Exeter).
Name formation: since de Exeter is 1250 onward, the name is indeed Early Modern Gaelic. Although <de Exeter> is Anglo-Norman, not Gaelic, it became used as a Gaelic family name. Per SENA< Appendix C, Gaelic and English are compatible across this period.
Øyuinder Byornsson (New Name and Device sent to Laurel)
The submitter will NOT accept any changes to the name and cares about the gender (male) of the name. The submitter further clarified that they are willing to accept <Byornson> with the single <s> if necessary.
Øyuinder - Lind col. 256 1389,1430
Byornsson - Lind col. 145 1413 includes a variety of spellings: Byornson, Byørnson, Biornsson, Biørnsson, based on which we believe this to be acceptable.
The name formation Old Norse/Old Icelandic name formation <given + patronymic> is found in SENA Appendix A.

Designator - Language - Reference
Legion - English - Kál-Bárðr Gellir, 02/2023, A-Meridies
All the registered examples are in the formation: Legion of X
The Latin form would be Legio DI Gladiatores or Legio CCCCCI Gladiatores, although the West College found no record of Roman legions numbered higher than 30. Following other translation patterns and using Lingua Societatis, this could be translated as 501st Gladiatorial Legion.
Badge:
This badge submission form is marked to be associated with the name 501st Gladiatorial Legion.
Sable, a vol and a vol inverted and conjoined, overall a plate charged with a cogwheel all between four swords in cross, hilts to center, argent.
The West College notes that the plate touches both the vols and the field, but are not convinced it is large enough to be an overall charge.RETURNS – May (2024)
