REPORTS

Vesper (Eilis), Successor (Damir): This will most likely be her last report as Vesper. Plans are proceeding for a smooth transition at Purgatorio.

Calendar: the new calendar is not showing the heralds’ meetings for the remainder of the year. Matins and Vesper will work on this and on getting meetings scheduled for the following year.

Glitch for all heralds to be aware of: none of the event copy for Oerthan events for August and September made it into the July or August Pages. This means that these events, per Corpora, are no longer official events. Because of this, no awards can be given at these activities. If any awards ARE given, they must be re-given at an official event at a later date and reported for the event date. Please work with any Seneschals to ensure they are confirming their event copy is showing up in the Page and to reach out to the Communications Team for assistance as needed.

Seawolf (Moira): Moira lost her temporary successor. This is putting a wrench in her plans, as she cannot step into Green Crown until she can step out of Seawolf. Eilis offers to take Green Crown temporarily.

Many thanks to Skinner of Storyteller Keep, who has stepped in and assisted the Royalty, including from Drachenwald!

Sable Swan (Victoria): The Cynaguan Ceremonies book has been updated thanks to a group effort with Hirsch, Caoilinn, Moira, Tuathflaith, and myself. It will need to be updated again in the next month with minor corrections and a new ceremony for a new award.

At yesterday's event, a lot of people helped with heralding. She would especially like to thank Sven Gotfriedson for being thrown in at the last minute to herald the last court for the Princess. And as always thank you to Caoilinn and Moria for all that they do.

Sable Swan is looking for a successor.

Stellanordica (Caitríona ): Things continue fairly smoothly in Oertha. Their Coronet tourney and investiture will take place next weekend (July 19-21), and she anticipates that folks will step up and help with heralding as usual (she’s always grateful for the willingness of Oerthans to help!). June Crown in Oertha tapped local help, as well.

Court reports for Baronial and Principality levels seem to be turned in timely and she believes are being approved timely as well.

Stellanordica is finishing a final check-through of the Oertha ceremonies book today and will be sending copies to Hirsch to PDF and upload, and to the Princess (because she offered to print a couple of copies affordably!). Law changes from earlier this year have been incorporated into the ceremonies, including the new Greater Officers.

Caitríona is aware of one person who's hoping to submit a name and device for review, but is not sure if all the documentation made it in on time for this meeting - if it didn't, she will follow up with him again soon.

Stellanoridca will also be posting notices seeking a successor. While she’s happy to help with heralding, Caitríona has held this office for roughly 4 years and would love to pass the baton.

Exchequer (Damir): Successor (Moira of Kent): The College remains solvent and our account with the College of Arms is current. Transition to his successor is well underway. Deposits should be sent to her starting this meeting.

Matins (Edith): A quick reminder that Pennsic has a full Heralds Point, including consultation and acceptance of submissions. Any Western Heralds or others who would like training are encouraged to visit Point and speak to the heralds in charge there. As in the past few years, the West will accept submissions processed at Pennsic.

Matins has received the needed contact information to switch over sending deposits to Moira.

Special thanks to Ræv and Aasa for helping with submissions that needed further documentation or adjustment. The submissions process continues to run. This month's reminder for consulting heralds for themselves and their submitters is to send in a fully completed armory form, with the image included. Several submissions were sent in with the image separate. Matins attempted to assist submitters by completing the form, but cannot always guarantee this will be possible.

Baldric (training deputy): Vesper is running training as a College-wide program, not assigned to a specific individual at this time.

Collegium scheduled at the Equestrian and Archery championship event on Saturday Sept. 14. There will be space for two BCs, Alizan will bring the heralds pavilion, Victoria will arrange for Cynaguan heralds. Potential classes were discussed. If you want to run a class that has not been discussed yet, please message Vesper.

Brachet (vacant), Leveret (Ræv). No report received.

Green Cloak (Alizan): She was not at June Crown, but it went well. Kudos to all the heralds at Cynaguan Investiture. The next event will be Fall Crown.

Green Crown (Damir), Successor (Eilis): Damir’s thanks to his Deputy Moira of Kent and all who assisted at June Crown. Kingdom courts continue to happen and reports are being filed and affirmed. Note that as of this morning, as mentioned in Seawolf’s report, she is not able to take over this role at this time and Eilis will instead step in temporarily.

Important Reminder to all Court Heralds: SCA Corpora has an explicit policy on religion in our game. Through a combination of factors Damir permitted an augmentation of arms to be presented as a "sainting" in spite of his own better judgment on the manner. There were, rightly so, members of the populace who took issue with this.

As such, this is just a gentle but firm reminder that if your Royalty comes to you with "schtick" please keep in mind that there are some limits clearly written and needing to be observed going forward. It is our shared responsibility to help them from committing such faux pas or, at the least, commit it from an informed standpoint.

Green Trumpet (Gwenhwyfaer): No report received.

Green Banner (Aasa): The Consultation Table at Southern Shores Newcomers Tourney was wonderfully busy. The new boxes for the Library are working well and are now organized by language group, which proved successful, as people were able to browse while she was working with other submitters. Many thanks to His Highness Kean and Raev for their assistance and she hopes they had as excellent a time as she did. We seem to be having a significant influx of newcomers, and being able to meet and assist them in person is one of the reasons she loves this office.

Several consultations begun at Newcomers have continued online. One of this current batch of submissions is also from that event. Aasa is now active on the West Kingdom discord server, which she had somehow missed the existence of, and there are several more ongoing consultations there, both in the heraldry channel and privately. She is hoping that the in-channel consultations will be helpful to other submitters and newer consulting heralds to see how the process works, find resources, and get their questions about our rules answered. Email consultations also continue.

Many thanks to Evenstar Keep for hosting Aasa and the Consultation Table at Cynagua Coronet. Their support was invaluable. She was able to do some more in-depth consultations.

The next planned event for the Consultation Table is the Midsummer Revel in Montainge du Roi, and unless something goes sideways, Aasa expects to be running it at Purgatorio, as well. She is generally quite happy to bring the Consultation Table to particular events on request, as well. Aasa aims to be as accessible as possible.

Golem (Hirsch): Golem Herald has been doing the usual things, and so far, we seem to be in good shape with court reports and confirmations from the Royalty, many of whom are right on top of the reports when they come in. (This is as the report is being written, expect the An Tir / West War reports soon ...)

Golem has been working with Stellanordica and Sable Swan on ceremony book updates. Oertha’s ceremonies were just turned in. The Cynaguan Ceremonies after a rush of back and forth with Victoria (Sable Swan) and some help from Caoilinn, Moira, and Princess Tuathflaith, were completed just in time to get them printed for Investiture. As of now, there are no Kingdom or Principality ceremony books under revision!

No real updates to the Heralds’ website. The Award List now has a field to display notes about a specific award, which will show a button next to the award name in appropriate places, for example, for a Herald Extraordinary, it may include, if the herald has registered one, a personal herald’s title. A goal is go to through (another deep dive in the data, yippee!) and add for out-of-kingdom awards the names of the royalty that gave those recognitions, and that field seems an appropriate place to do so. That will take a bit of time, but it’s not a rush thing, so ...

SUBMISSONS – July (2024)

ITEMS SENT TO LAUREL

Anna Bonci (New Name sent to the CoA)

The submitter will accept the following changes: spelling variations that sound the same, such as Ana Bonzi, Ahna Bonsi, or making it more flamboyant as long as it includes Anna and Bonci in variation that would be fine…

The submitter cares about the sound (none noted) and gender (female) of the name.

Anna - from NCS “Feminine Names from 15th-Century Bologna (Italy)”, by Gigi Coulson (Magnifica Gianna Maddalena Alberti/ Giata Magdalena Alberti): Anna [https://heraldry.sca.org/names/bolognese/].

Bonci - documentation of this spelling not provided.

Bonzi - from NCS 15th & 16th century Venetian names in "Late Period Italian Women's Names: Venice" by Juliana de Luna (Julia Smith): Bonzi [http://medievalscotland.org/jes/Nuns/Venice.shtml].

Alternate spelling: Boncii - from NCS “Masculine Names from Thirteenth Century Pisa: Bynames in Alphabetical Order”, by Juliana de Luna (Julia Smith): Boncii [https://heraldry.sca.org/names/pisa/pisa-bynames-alpha.html].

From Heraldrys Institute of Rome: Bonci is widespread in central Italy, Boncio is very rare and Umbrian, Bonzi seems to have two stocks, in the area that includes the Milanese, Bergamo and Brescia areas, and in the Bolognese area, extremely rare Bonzo would appear from Turin and Asti, all derive from the medieval name Boncius, an example of this modification is found in the Diplomatic Code of medieval Lombardy, under the year 1175, in Brescia, where, in a testimony, we read: "... Marchesium Peccorarium to guard illam silvam for Sanctum Petrum et per vicinos de Nuvolera ; et post istos vidit Bonzolum et Scaliam et alios quamplures, scilicet Walterium et Rubeum, guard similiter illam silvam per vicinos ... ". Trace of this surname we find in the list of students of the University of Perugia where, in the year 1577, a certain Mercurius Boncius appears, or in San Giovanni Bianco (BG) where in 1718 he becomes parish priest of the local church of San Gallo a certain Don Vittorio Bonzi. [https://www.heraldrysinstitute.com/lang/en/ricerca/?search=BONCI]

The Italian name formation <given + byname> is found in SENA Appendix A.

Ciar of Skye (New Device Change sent to the CoA)

The previously registered device is to be retained as a badge: Or, a fox salient proper and issuant from base a demi-sun, a chief triangular sable.

New Device:
Per pale and per bend sinister or and gules, a corvid close to sinister sable maintaining a rose slipped & leaved vert and a fox salient proper.

Cressida Foster (New Name & Device sent to the CoA)

The submitter cares about the sound (the name should sound like 'Cressida' and should be spelled as similarly as possible) and gender (female) of the name.

Cressida - from NCS Withycombe, p.75 under the heading Cressida: Cressida appears in Shakespeare.

Foster - from NCS Bardsley, p.297 under the heading Foster: Foster dated 1379, 1643, 1644.

The English name formation <given + byname> is found in SENA Appendix A.

Device:
Per chevron inverted azure and argent, an otter statant contourney regardant argent, two springs of lavender in chevron inverted slipped and leaved proper, a bordure sable.

Geoffery Bauer (Resub Device sent to the CoA)

Device submission: Azure, a stag trippant, an orle of thorn vines Or, was returned on the October 2023 LoAR with the notes: “This device is returned for conflict with the badge of Richardus Pfeiffer von Karlstadt, Azure, a hind trippant, a chief raguly Or. There is a single DC for changing the chief to an orle of thorn vines.” The submitter has added additional charges to clear the conflict.

Device resubmission: Azure, a stag lodged between three fleurs-de-lis, an orle of thorn vines Or, was returned on the April 2024 LoAR with the notes: “This device is returned for using the restricted motif of France, Three or more Or fleurs-de-lys on an azure background.”

Device:
Azure, a stag lodged within an orle of thorn vines, in base a fleur-de-lis Or.

Jane The Reborn (Resub Name Change sent to the CoA)

The previous submission, Jane the Reborn, was returned on the January 2019 LoAR with the comments: This name must be returned for lack of documentation. The Letter of Intent argued that the byname the Reborn is reasonable based on the fact that the word regenerat appears in Middle English. However, there is no evidence that regenerat or "reborn" was used as a byname for a person. We also could not find any English bynames with similar or related meanings that would support a naming pattern. There were several period English bynames that referred to piety or religious faith, but none of them used the language of "rebirth" sometimes seen in late period (and modern) Protestant writings. Probably the closest period byname we found was la Converse (Reaney & Wilson s.n. Converse, dated to 1214), which referred to someone who had converted from secular to religious life. However, we do not believe that this descriptive byname fairly supports the lingua Societatis form "the Reborn" -- we read it more as "the Convert."

Commenters did find the unmarked Reborn as a late 16th century English surname. However, this surname appears to be a variant spelling of the attested Rayburn or Ryburn, both of which were place names that gave rise to surnames. It does not support the kind of descriptive byname desired by the submitter.

We would change the name to the attested Jane _ Reborn, but the submitter allows no changes.

Documentation of the name and name formation has been provided with the resubmission as follows:

The submitter will NOT accept ANY changes.

English name documentation: Per SENA PN2.C.1., the submitted name is culturally uniform to late 15th century England. Per SENA Appendix A, late period English double bynames are allowed following the pattern <given + byname + byname>.

Alternatively, the submitted name fulfills the requirements of SENA PN2.C.2: Culturally Mixed Names: Jane The Reborn is a plausible Culturally Mixed Name with an English Parent and a French parent, with either an English or a French given name.

This is identified as a prefix byname, documented and marked as follows: “A few notes before we proceed to the list: there are essentially two types of bynames. One follows the given name as a second word, the second is prefixed to the given name to form a compound word. For example, kráka 'crow' would follow the given name, e.g. Þorsteinn kráka 'Þorsteinn the crow,' while Kráku- 'crow' is a prefix, e.g. Kráku-Þorsteinn 'Crow-Þorsteinn.' Bynames that are prefixed to the given name are identified in the lists in two ways. They are capitalized, and they end in a dash, meaning that they are hypenated with the given name. Bynames that follow the given name do not have the dash and are not capitalized, as was usual in Norse naming.”

A recent return (Feb 2024 LoAR) noted that a moustache has not been registered in several decades and therefore requires documentation that the charge is compatible with period armorial style.

Despite requests for assistance from heralds at a variety of levels, no documentation of a mustache as a period charge was found. With the commentary from the LoAR this year, where heralds already reviewed and attempted to document this charge without success, this device is returned for further work.
