REPORTS

Vesper (Antonio): Deputy (Eilis): He will be at Crown next weekend, but might not be able to stay for the whole time. One of the primary duties of Principal Herald is sealing scrolls, which he never tires of seeing the beautiful artwork. Many thanks and much appreciation to Hirsch for all of his work for the College, specifically with the new cards for those people offered entrance into a Peerage.

Discussion of a possible Heralds Collegium in February or March.

Seawolf (Moira): Mists Fall Cornet List was held on September 9. She would like to thank Lady Ketta of Wolfscairn, THL Savage Buffie, Viscount Sir Leon von Schrecken, Baroness Mercy Grym, and Master Dommamir Vlatko syn, Grym Herald, for covering the Field Heralding duties for both the Heavy and Rapier lists. On the field that day, she had more volunteers than need for voices! Thanks also to Elewys Gwynne and Sir Colin MacLear for standing at the ready, to Herald if needed.

Her thanks to Lord Moss of Little Marsden for assisting as Consort's Side Herald for Evening Court.

Thanks also to His Grace Duke Frederick of Holland for making himself available for Consultations if needed. During her tenure as SeaWolf Herald, she has had no requests for name or device consultations at Principality events.

Sable Swan (Victoria): No report received

Stellanordica (Catriona): Court: With the possible exception of the Hrafnafjordr event on 9/9, Principality court reports should be up to date (with thanks to Hirsch for the additional name corrections on the Pennsic report!). Baronial court reports may have one or two outstanding hiccups, but are making progress in submissions and approvals.

Their Highnesses continue attending additional events and recognizing worthy gentles. They've been generously working with local heralds (as I've missed several events), which is helpful in letting folks get experience. Her thanks to those who have stepped up and served in that role!

Tournaments: The next Principality event is Coronet Tournament and Investiture in January.

Consulting Khevron assisted with consulting at Pennsic (he estimates 18-19 devices or badges). Additionally, he is working with some locals in Winter's Gate on names and armory. Ástríðr has received inquiries but had no follow up from the gentles.

Ástríðr shared several old heraldic folders/books with Stellanordica for review and return or disposal (Stellanordica hasn't scanned them yet, but the intention is to scan Oertha-specific records so there is an electronic record. Many of the book copies were poor quality or already available online, and these won't be scanned. Khevron was also interested in several). A former Stellanordica (Flanna Dunwalton) would like her folders returned after the scanning, so that is the plan for those records.

Finance Committee Report/Meeting
Committee Members Present: AJ Pongratz, Vesper (Chapter President), David Derpich, Exchequer (Chapter Treasurer) Absent: Frederick Hollander (Member at large), Kris Gulliver (Kingdom Banking Treasurer)

The Finance committee makes the official determination that the following individuals should be added to the SCA Inc, West Kingdom College of Heralds bank account (currently Mechanic's Bank account number ending 4943) effective and as soon as possible after the date of this meeting 09/27/2023:

AJ Pongratz, Chapter President

Further we find that the address of the bank account should be updated from 2322 Russell St. Berkeley, CA 94705-1926 to 72 Malts Drive, San Francisco, CA 94131 effective the same date.

No objections were raised.

Matins (Edith): The submissions process continues to roll through. This month’s submissions includes those processed at Pennsic. Please remind all submitters and consulting heralds to use the new forms available on the West Heralds site, and that payment must still be sent in via snail mail, electronic payment is not yet available.

Green Crown (Domamir): We successfully had courts at Purgatorio, and all the reports have been filed and approved. Preparations for Crown, this next weekend, are underway.

Baldric (training deputy): Vesper is running training as a College-wide program, not assigned to a specific individual at this time.

Brachet (vacant).

Green Cloak (Alizan): Green Cloak is seeking a successor, please contact Vesper.

Green Trumpet (Gwenhwyfaer): Green Trumpet attended Purgatorio and provided service to the Crown and Populace of the West. We were fortunate to have a couple of new volunteers to assist with the duty shouts. The new voice heralds expressed interest in continuing with the work and we hope to see them again soon. The new volunteers were as follows: Karl Larssen, Thomas Hawker (new herald for Rivenoak). All in all, everything went well for the Green Trumpet office. The next event will be Fall Crown.

Green Banner (Aasa): The Consultation Table was delightfully busy at Purgatorio, and she has continued several of those consultations via email. Additionally, she continues to do consultations via email, Facebook, Facebook Messenger, and Discord.

Unless something goes wrong, she will be running the Consultation Table at Fall Crown next weekend.

She has had a few people express interest in learning how to do book heraldry and she has been encouraging them.

Knowne World Heralds and Scribes Symposium in June was excellent. She was able to expand her repertoire of non-European naming practices with classes on names from Goryeo-era Korea and non-Arabic names from the Congolese region of West Africa in the 15th-16th centuries.

Golem (Hirsch): The last two months have been odd, some court report fun that’s been resolved, and a few other things (no need to go into details). Overall, though, it’s been fairly quiet. He did find a few minor code issues with the roster system he thought had been resolved, which appear to be now.

We are asking, and he and Domamir updated the ceremony, that if the Crown gives out Defender of the West, that when you get people’s names, ask them to write their names legibly (don’t use cursive -- readability issues), and to note the Kingdom they are from. It can take a long time to hunt down some of the names if the herald can’t read them, and Golem’s processing includes sending the award information to the precedence clerk of the Kingdom someone belongs to if they are not in the West, so their listings can be updated there.

Reminder that when you use the Heralds’ website, if you have a hard time finding something, or you think we can improve something please feel free to let him know. If no one says anything, he assumes all is good, so it’s kind of important to hear from folk.

Mouri Tsubakie (NEW Name and Device sent to Laurel)

The submitter will NOT accept MAJOR changes and cares about the meaning (none noted), gender (female), and requests Authenticity for Japanese naming conventions in Late Period/Momoyama Era/1550's.

Family name Mouri documentation: ("The Far East" University of Michigan Volume 6, issue 7, 1875) ("Samurai - The World of the Warrior" Stephen Turnbull, 2003, page 105) ("The Samurai: A Military History" Stephen Turnbull, 1977, page 131) ("Mohri Motonari" NHK documentary, 02-15-1997).

Clan in Japan founded in the first half of the 13th century, rose to prominence in the later period/1550's due to Mouri Motonari's success in several major military campaigns, eventually becoming a daimyou/warlord in the western Chuugoku region of Japan.

And more simply, it's dated to 1332 in NCMJ.

Given name Tsubakie documentation: "Tsubaki/Camellia": ("Monogatari no.19 Motohama-cho's Traviata Kannon" Tosho Ieyasu Monogatari Collection) Requires translation.

Posthumous name given to Otadzu-no-Kata, wife of warlord Iio Otadzu. She was the lord of her husband's castle (Hikuma Castle) after his death in battle during the Warring States Period/December 1568 by Tokugawa Ieyasu, and she was killed during the subsequent siege of her castle after the battle. Became known by this name due to the hundreds of camellias planted on her grave by Ieyasu's wife in respect for Otadzu-no-kata's bravery in defense of her castle.

(tabi2ikitai.com/japan/j2202a/a01013.html) page discussing the shrine dedicated to Otadzu-no-kata/Lady Tazu, requires translation.

(tsubaki.or.jp/about) Requires translation Shrine name used by the Tsubaki Grand Shrine located in the Ise region of Japan, and given this name by Reimu Goryo during the reign of Emperor Nintoku (313-399), the 16th emperor of Japan.

"~e": The secondary kanji 'e' is listed as a traditional part of feminine names, meaning "branch", on the Sengoku Daimyo name page, link given above. This kanji can also be found as an element in a surname, as "Edayoshi" on page 158 of the Sengoku Population Record/Sengoku Jinmei Jiten, compiled from names found in extant records of the Sengoku era battles, personages, and written documents and published in 1990 by Shinjinbutsu Oraisha. This name can be documented to 1571, when this family became vassals to the Ryouzoji clan. Per several Japanese dictionaries, this kanji has several readings, primarily based on where it's found within the kanji compound and which kanji it is connected to. The desired reading of 'e' instead of 'eda' follows this linguistical conjugation rule, as it is one of the forms that the desired kanji takes when used in names.

While neither 'tsubaki' nor '~e' are explicitly given in NCMJ, they do follow the traditional feminine name construction rules, as they mean "camellia" and "(shrub) branch", respectfully, which would be appropriate for a persona of this time period and type. Examples of flower elements from NCMJ used as first elements in feminine names include hollyhock, wisteria, chrysanthemum, and generic flower.

When these two are combined, this name follows the typical two kanji rule for names during later period, as discussed by Sengoku Daimyo and displayed by most names compiled in the Sengoku Population Record. We need to redocument the second element as Sengoku Daimyo is not considered a reliable source.

Device:
Argent, a peony in profile conjoined to three oak leaves inverted, within three bamboo shoots conjoined in annulo sable.

Nadbroicc inigena Druisten (NEW Name Change sent to Laurel)

Previously registered Ommadan ingen Ruaidri Ui Gallchobair is to be retained as an alternate.

The submitter cares about the language and/or culture (early period Pictish), has no gender preference, and requests Authentiticy for language and/or culture (earlier period Pictish).

Nadbroicc: is found as a Pictish female given name at "Eithni's Keep" (https://eithni.com/pictish-names/). In the linked Excel file, Eithni says it is found in the Book of Lecan. She is the Mother of Niall ma Trichim of Ulaid (Ulster). Reported to be from the "family of Inge of the Picts" Eithni indicates that there is an Excellent likelihood that this is a Pictish women's name.

inigena is the patronymic marker in Oghamic inscriptions, contemporary to early Pictish.

Connolly states in her article A Partial Reading of the Stones: a Comparative Analysis of Irish and Scottish Ogham Pillar Stones at [https://dc.uwm.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1804&context=etd] "...the Eglwys Cymmin stone has an ogham inscription which can be transcribed as AVITTORIGES INIGENA CUIGNI and a Latin inscription of AVITORIA FILIA CVNIGNI, both of which can be translated as "Avitoriges daughter of Cunigni" (McManus 1991: 50)". The full McManus citation is: McManus, Damian. 1991. A Guide to Ogham. An Sagart, Maynooth.

Druisten is found in NCS "A Consideration of Pictish Names" by Tangwystyl verch Morgant Glasvryn copyright 1996 Heather Rose Jones. s.n. "Drust/an". The full citation is "Druisten II.B.4. IrHB, patronym, historic kings" [https://www.s-gabriel.org/names/tangwystyl/pictnames/pict5.html#section5].

Submitter is aware that 'inigena' is the oghamic 'daughter of' construction, rather than the Latin 'filia'. Submitter would strongly prefer the non-Latin patronymic marker. If the College of Arms can find a Pictish female patronymic marker, submitter would prefer that.

The Pictish name formation <given + byname> is found in SENA Appendix A.
