REPORTS

Vesper (Antonio): Deputy (Eilis): There was discussion last meeting about holding a Heralds Collegium early next year. Vesper has requested Sun. Apr. 7, 2024. This is confirmed and on the Kingdom Calendar. Vesper asks our tenured Heralds to teach classes, and he is also going to try and bring in a “key-note speaker” Herald from out-Kingdom.

As a reminder, please use the Officers of the College when requesting resources, training, classes, etc. For example, if you are located in the Mists, reach out to Seawolf Herald, or the local group herald. Of course discussion can happen with others, but the Officer in charge of that area should be included.

Wax for seals is available for or has already been handed off to each of the Principalities.

His thanks to the Officers of the College who sent in reports for this meeting or are in attendance to submit their reports in person.

Seawolf (Moira): Investiture of Alaric and Sorcha as Prince and Princess of the Mists will take place next Saturday.

Seawolf would like to thank Ketty Belisdottir for acting as an "on the spot" Herald during Their Highnesses Roland and Audrey's reign. A member of Their Court, she was always ready to act as Court Herald if the need arose.

Sable Swan (Victoria): Cynaguan heraldic functions and responsibilities continue. Sable Swan is looking for a successor. Special thanks to Viscount Cormac, he has helped as Court Herald for Their Highnesses frequently as they traveled.

There was a Principality Law Change at Coronet, she will be working to rewrite the relevant ceremony.

Sable Swan is looking for a successor, please contact her for more information. Please also feel free to introduce those to her who might be a good fit for the job.

Stellanordica (Catriona): Stellanoridca has been away from Oertha for a month, and will be leaving again at the end of November, so she has not been involved in events directly, and will miss more. Catriona is grateful to the local heralds who step in to assist, and to Their Highnesses' gracious work with these volunteers. From emails received, it appears that award reporting is working smoothly for Their Highnesses at least, and she is seeing at least some Baronial reports come through as well. Her thanks as well to Hirsch for his diligent and reliable work ensuring these things get completed!

From a recent report, Stellanordica sees that Selviergard recently changed heralds, so she will need to reach out to their new officer to see what support they may need. Catriona doesn’t think there are changes in the other Oerthan baronies at the moment.

She does not have much else to report - Oertha will not have another Principality event until January (Coronet Tournament and Investiture), though she anticipates Their Highnesses will continue to attend events around the principality and will continue to work with local folks until then. Stellanoridca hopes to be at Coronet, herself.

Catriona would welcome a successor or deputy, as she has held this office for some time now, but if there is still flexibility to tolerate her quirky life, she is still happy to serve for now. Please also feel free to introduce those to her who might be a good fit for the job.

Exchequer (Damir): Successor (Heinreich): The College remains solvent and our balance with the SCA College of Arms is up to date. Still pending finance policy and law changes to allow electronic payments for submissions. Damir sent a follow up to Master Edmond regarding the needed changes to the Mechanics Bank account.

Matins (Edith): The Matins office continues to function, with submissions reaching the office, being processed, sent on to the SCA CoA, and then notifying the submitters once registration is official. Matins also continues to work with other Kingdoms for some of the Wars to coordinate submissions. This month's submissions include those collected by the Caidan submissions heralds at GWW.

A reminder for all that the next meeting will happen in-person at West Twelfth Night and will not be available for online participation. The submissions deadline for this meeting is earlier than standard due to the holidays: Wed. Dec. 20. Fees for the submissions for the January meeting must reach Matins by Thurs. Jan. 4th or be brought in-person to the meeting.

Thanks to Aasa Green Banner for providing consulting assistance and to Ræv Kolfinsson for providing armory redraw assistance.

Baldric (training deputy): Vesper is running training as a College-wide program, not assigned to a specific individual at this time.

Brachet (vacant).

Green Cloak (Alizan): Green Cloak is seeking a successor, please contact Vesper.

Green Crown (Damir), Successor (Gillian): Courts continue and reports are being submitted and confirmed. Will begin prepping for 12th Night soon. Thanks to Moira O’Connor for covering Green Crown at Cynaguan Coronet.

Green Trumpet (Gwenhwyfaer): No report received.

Green Banner (Aasa): No report received.

Golem (Hirsch): In the last couple of months, due to several people having issues with Chrome (web browser) and the herald’s site not being set to “Secure”, and some back-and-forth with the Kingdom web team, it turns out the hosting service we’re using is providing security certificates for free. (He only found out when one of the web team members mentioned it as part of the discussion, which included “I can’t afford to pay for these certificates”.) So the Kingdom Heralds’ website (the Roster, the History site …) has been upgraded to use the security certificates, and now the URLs all use “https://” rather than “http://”. This of course had some odd effects, and every static web page on the heralds’ site needed to be checked for links and so on, to ensure that everything worked properly. (The award list, the roster, and history sites all were designed in a way that a single change in one file, with only some minor other places, needed to be fixed … good planning on his part, even if unexpected in this case.) Anyway, it’s all running “secure” now.

Other than that, it’s been mostly the same. A lot of work going into some upcoming classes on heraldry, more details later. Court reports are mostly coming in in a timely fashion, the Royalty have been pretty good about turnaround (Cynagua has been so on top of things it’s been amazing … with Prince Caleb confirming reports almost as soon as they are coming in).

Regarding moustaches:

The only existing registrations of moustaches are from 1981, both to Robin of Gilwell. The LoaR has this note:

NOTE: Appeal granted. A mustache on a cross was used in 1671 in France. That is close enough to indicate that they did use that sort of thing in period. (See Odrowas, p. 337, Menestrier, Le Veritable Art du Blason (enclosed).)

From Mistholme: under the entry Beard:

The beard is the facial hair of the human male, particularly that grown on the chin and jaws; it's considered a facial ornament, at least by men. It's a period heraldic charge, found in the canting arms (Italian barba) of Barbani, c.1550 [BSB Cod.Icon 272:87; cf. Woodward 203].

Similar to the beard is the "moustache", which is the hair grown on a man's upper lip only. No example of the moustache, per se, is known in period armory. However, based on the example of the beard, the moustache is considered acceptable in Society heraldry. [https://mistholme.com/?s=moustache]
