REPORTS

Vesper (Antonio): Deputy (Eilis): no report. Needs solid reports for next meeting for his report to corporate. Thanks all for carrying on.

Seawolf (Damir): Successor (Moira of Kent): Nothing major. Prep for Mists-Cyn and Coronet. Working with successor to take over in November.

Sable Swan (Moira O’Connor): Successor (Victoria): Handed over office to Victoria at Investiture on Saturday. Still working on Court when there IS a ceremony book. Investiture went well. Experiment with court: announcement herald separate from court heralds will make announcements when heralds are delayed.

Stellanordica (Caitriona): Catriona will be taking a sabbatical from the office, from Oertha's July Coronet until Oertha's January Coronet 2023. Her gratitude goes to Her Grace Eilis for taking the mantle for the duration!

For long term succession plans, she has one person in Selviergard and one in Winter's Gate who want to learn more about the office. While both have experience, neither is a current herald. Catriona plans to work with them on training to eventually be able to take over the office.

The Barony of Winter's Gate had a herald changeover in April; Baron Hans and Baron Khevron swapped Baronial coronet and heraldic baldric. (Hans Shaffer is now the herald.)

The Barony of Selviergard is still looking for a successor for the herald's office.

The Barony of Eskalya is still represented by Verica (Viresse) as Herald. They also have a lady interested in court heralding who should be able to get some practice at Coronet.

Oertha will have Summer Coronet tournament and investiture July 22-24. Anne and Eilis have offered to help teach heralding, and there are several folks interested in learning more. They typically have several folks willing and able to help herald the tourney and courts; Catriona will likely make one more "pitch" on Facebook reminding folks they’d like volunteers, before the event. She will bring the Oerthan heraldic tote to the event to hand off to Eilis's keeping.

Exchequer (Damir): Successor (Heinreich Dexter): The College remains solvent. He has conversed with Master Edmond who advises that the process to allow the College to accept submission payments digitally is still ongoing. Edmond will also be assisting Damir with the move of the College's accounts from Mechanic's Bank to Bank of the West. Damir will be looping in his successor and Vesper to this process to ensure signatures are updated for checks.

Matins (Edith): Matins would like to welcome Mac (Ruadrí Mac Muichertaig) and Sieglinde (THL Sieglinde von der Hohenwuste, formerly of Caid). These two individuals responded to Edith’s request for people interested in helping with the office. They are working with her to go through training and start assisting with the duties of Matins.

Submissions continue to go through the process. If you are working with a submitter, please don’t forget to remind them that fees must be sent in. As per the update from Damir last meeting, fees must still be sent via postal mail as listed at http://heralds.westkingdom.org/Register.php, although the Exchequer’s office is working on electronic payment processing.

Green Crown (Eilis): Deputy (Damir): All courts, including roving and kiddie pool courts, for Their Majesties Kenric and Dagmar have been reported from Cynagua Coronet, June Crown, and An Tir-West War. She believes they have also been confirmed.

Baldric (vacant): Training within the College: Vesper plans on running training as a College-wide program, not assigned to a specific individual at this time.

Brachet (Kean): no report.

Green Cloak (Alizan): Twenty-one heralds signed in for Summer Crown, including two new heralds: Bradley and Virgil. Unfortunately, she lost track of Bradley, but Virgil came back and worked with Master Edward and performed well. We’ll be keeping him. We also saw the return of His Highness Cormac, who soloed during rounds 1 and 2.

She is changing the sign-in setup to clipboards, so she does not have to continually flip through the book every time someone requests a shout or court business, and to facilitate assignments. The clipboards have protective cover sheets and rubber bands across the bottom to hold the pages in place.

Green Trumpet (Gwenhwyfaer): The Green Trumpet office is operational. Duty shouts were sent at regular intervals on both Saturday and Sunday of June Crown beginning at 8am. In particular, she would like to thank Richard Talbot, Edward le Kervere and Mercy Grym for their assistance.

Green Trumpet will plans to be at Purgatorio and Fall Crown.

Green Banner (Aasa): All quiet on the Western front. She is continuing to do online consultations, but has not been able to make it to events since the last meeting.

Golem (Hirsch): Really busy with court reports or not busy at all…in between, he’s documenting processes. Anne is working on the ceremony book process (style sheets, etc.) Awards List process keeps growing. Website process is in the works.

An Ard - Index of Names in Irish Annals: Masculine Descriptive Bynames by Mari Elspeth nic Bryan (Kathleen M. O'Brien) [http://medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnnalsIndex/DescriptiveBynames/]. <Ard> is listed here, but the suggested correct name formation would be <Aodh Ard> rather than <Aodh An Ard>.

Mac An Gobhann - surname.

Note for the West Heralds: Kingdoms are expressly requested to NOT return names that we are unable to document, as the heralds of the Known World may have more success. Arnóra Ulfsdotter (NEW Name sent to Laurel)

The submitter cares about the meaning (none noted) and gender (female) of the name.

Arnóra - NCS Geirr Bassi p.7: Arnora

and from the Viking Answer Lady “Arnóra” [http://www.vikinganswerlady.com/ONWomensNames.shtml].

Ulfsdotter - Bassi p. 15 has <Ulfr> and several combinations. The formation of the patronymic is according to Bassi p. 17.

The Scandinavian name formation <given + byname> is acceptable per SENA Appendix A.

Astriðr Tryggsdottir (NEW Name sent to Laurel)

The submitter cares about the meaning (none noted) and gender (female) of the name.

Ceara inghean Alcan (NEW Name and Device sent to Laurel)

The submitter will NOT accept MAJOR changes and cares about the sound (none noted), and gender (female) of the name.

Ceara - Irish Gaelic (College of St. Gabriel) http://www.s-gabriel.org/2106.

The Gaelic name <Cera> is found in early medieval Irish records, before 1200 [1]. Gaelic spelling underwent a change around the year 1200, and this name was spelled <Ceara> in the later system.

inghean - per SENA, Appendix A, this is the correct spelling for Early Modern Gaelic.

Further documentation can be found at [http://medievalscotland.org/scotnames/quickgaelicbynames/index.shtml].

Alcan - Norse/Swedish? (prior registration by Household member Sven Gunther Alcan June,1990 Caid) unknown documentation.

Per SENA, Appendix C, Early Modern Gaelic is NOT compatible with Scandinavian languages, even if we could document Alcan as Scandinavian. And if it is just a locative or a descriptive byname, then it would be used without <inghean>.

Note for the West Heralds: Kingdoms are expressly requested to NOT return names that we are unable to document, as the heralds of the Known World may have more success. This name is being sent on, with the comments and research provided by our heralds, for the rest of the Known World to review, research, and comment on. Pelican will make the final decision if the name can be registered or not.

Note: Dauzet's "Dictionnaire étymologique des Noms de Famille et Prénoms de France" p. 5 lists <Alcan> as a surname derived from Spanish. It's undated and isn't a source that can be used with Gaelic, anyway.

FamilySearch has some 16th-17th cen. examples of the Spanish surname Alcan (not batch checked yet sorry):

Uckelman known in the SCA as Aryanhwy merch Catmael as the Latin form of a feminine given name, dated to between 1375 and 1468. The author lists four instances of this name in this spelling. (http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/swiss/villeneuve.html).

- Flemish feminine given name, found in the article "Vlaamse Vrouwennamen - Flemish Feminine Names 1259 - 1530" by Guntram von Wolkenstein, being found multiple times with this spelling. http://heraldry.sca.org/names/vlaamse.htm

von Teufelsberg - NCS Brechenmacher [1957-1960] volume 1 in the D/T section, page 297, lists <Teufelsberger> as derived from <Teufelsberg>. Note the interpolated "s". <Teuffelsberger> is dated to 1588. <Teufelsberg> is reasonable as a place name if these are locative surnames.

The German name formation <double given name + locative> can be found in SENA Appendix A.

Device submission was returned on the June 2018 LoAR with the comments: Device. Purpure, a winged ounce sejant, dexter forepaw raised, Or within a bordure argent semy of pairs of needles in saltire gules.

“This device is returned for redraw. Commenters struggled to identify the tertiary charges as needles, with most guessing that the charges in saltire were simply saltires couped.

Upon resubmission, the submitter should take steps to ensure that the tertiary charges have sufficient space to be identified, perhaps increasing the width of the bordure to assist in this effort.”

The resubmission addresses the identifiability of the tertiary charges.
