REPORTS

Vesper (Alizan): Still seeking candidates to take on the positions of Green Trumpet (town cry) deputy: Green Cloak (field) deputy; and Compline (successor to Principle Herald). Any interested parties should contact Vesper with their resumes (herald@westkingdom.org).

Seawolf (Damir): We had a virtual event and he still needs to submit the court report. No other activity to report since last meeting.

Sable Swan (Moira): All Court reports are in, and approved. There will be a Principality event at the end of the month. It has been moved to an out-door only in a different location. They will need field heralds. She has been actively consulting for submissions. She has a Deputy!

Stellanordica (Caitriona): Events have been held, Court reports were submitted and approved. She and Wolfhound (Oerthan consulting herald) are both looking for successors. Please send interest or resumes to (stellanordica@heralds.westkingdom.org).

Exchequer (Damir): The College remains solvent. No activity to report since last meeting.

Matins (Edith): Deputy (Hannah): Matins Office continues to function.

Mid-year Virtual Known World Heraldic Symposium will be held January 14-16, 2022. See [https://sites.google.com/view/midyearkwhss2022/home?authuser=0] for more information, including registration.

Green Crown (Eilis): As far as she can tell, all Courts held at Western events have been properly reported and have been/are being confirmed. There have been some problems with the mail-forwarding in Oertha, but that is being worked on. [Hirsch note: this has been fixed ...]

The West Kingdom's Twelfth Night had a virtual court. Officers were changed, awards were given, and Damir is still a saint.

The search for the bag of court tabards continues, but we have pretty much given up on them showing up. In the meantime, she and Anne FitzRichard are planning replacements for the Norse apron fronts to be ready for Spring Crown. Materials for this will come from her stash. They are planning to modify the new “regalia” so that they can be worn as a small cloak/baldric-y thing by male-presenting heralds. They are discussing materials and fabrication for more formal tabards and also plain baldrics for assistant Heralds.

The bag of ceremony books is with Anne FitzRichard.

Baldric (Gwenhwyfaer): Nothing to report.

Brachet (Kean), Leveret (Ræv): No report received.

Green Cloak (vacant): This position oversees Field Heralds for the Kingdom events (Crown tourneys, Wars, etc.). If interested in this position, please contact Vesper.

Green Trumpet (vacant): This position will oversee Town Cry (formerly called Duty Shout) and Heralds Point (information). If interested in this position, please contact Vesper.

Green Banner (Aasa): No report received.

Golem (Hirsch): This last couple of months have been busy-busy-busy. The Heraldic Archivist (Shauna of Carrick Point) appointed a deputy to assist with his project of filling in blanks for heraldry registered to people in the West, going back to the earliest days of the SCA (the ‘70s were fascinating for heraldry). Shauna had done several hundred requests, which is quite a lot, but in the last month+ Helena d’Èvreux has done over 1,400 pieces of armory, helping complete the personal armory also completed the missing branch armory.

As many of those earlier items were black and white (and in a few cases there were no pictures at all), and some of the art was … er … questionable … he has had the assistance of Ræv Kolfinsson in going through and re-doing them, as needed, cleaning them up and colorizing the art. Raev has been doing an amazing amount of work here. They are through the names beginning with ‘C’, and there’s a lot more, but he’s just working through them.

This is on top of having to data scrub (due to a weird upgrade issue from Dreamhost, who hosts the Awards List and History sites) the databases, fixing diacriticals and other special characters in names, and in the text. It’s been a lot of work, and it’s not complete, but large amounts of progress have been made.

There was an issue with Google’s Chrome browser and the awards list (and history …) that may have been resolved. He is relieved because it was something he couldn’t figure out. The display was weird, and scripts weren’t running (search routines, Court Report forms …). He has tested things in Chrome and they do seem to work (now).

SUBMISSONS – January (2022)

ITEMS SENT TO LAUREL
Ásta Bjornsdotter (NEW Name sent to Laurel)

The submitter will NOT accept ANY changes and cares about the gender (female) of the name.

Ásta - from Lind col. 85-6 sn. Ásta.
Asta Arnad. (nominative) Norway, 1386

Bjornsdotter - from Lind col. 145 sn. Biǫrn.
Biorns (genitive), Norway, 1330.
-dotter is a patronymic suffix used in 14th century names in Norway, as seen in Academy of Saint Gabriel report number 2685 (http://www.s-gabriel.org/2685), which states:

"The most common form for a patronymic [between 1370 and 1410] is the father's name in the genitive (possessive) case followed by <dotter>."

The Scandinavian naming pattern <given+patronymic> is found in SENA Appendix A.

The West College notes:

Bjǫrn: Lind dates this to at least 1290.
Bjǫrn: Bassi, p. 8

Form the genitive of the father's name, then add <-dóttir> to form the patronymic: Bassi, p. 17. Per Bassi, p. 18, the correct genitive form for <Bjǫrn> is <Bjarnar>. So this would result in <Bjarnardóttir>

Both Lind and Bassi list Bjǫrn with the o-ogonek form, but the diacritical is lost when it is converted to <Bjarnar->

The submitter has given express permission to change this name to Ásta Bjarnardóttir if required for registration, noting that this includes all accents and diacritical marks across the whole name.
