REPORTS
Vesper (Alizan): Still seeking candidates to take on the positions of Green Trumpet (town cry) deputy: Green Cloak (field) deputy; and Compline (successor to Principle Herald). Any interested parties should contact Vesper with their resumes (herald@westkingdom.org).
Received a stack of scrolls at Cynagua Coronet that need signatures and seals: will work on that next week.
Seawolf (Domamir): Events/courts are happening and reports are getting filed!
Sable Swan (Moira): Cynaguan Coronet happened and was successful. Reports have all been filed and approved. Last weekend’s court reports will be coming through by tomorrow.
Announcement: she has a deputy Victoria! Plan is for her to train for a year and potentially step up in 2022.
Stellanordica (Caitriona): Oertha held a Coronet and Investiture. Courts happened, thanks to several heralds, and especially Kinehild le librari who ran the court heralds. Other events also happened, including courts.
Astrid is currently seeking a replacement as herald in Selviergard, as well as for Wolfhound. Interested parties should contact Astrid or Baronial Seneschal Margarita (or they can talk to Stellanordica). Several branches in Oertha are currently lacking heralds of record. Stellanoridica is also searching for a successor.
Exchequer (Domamir): The College remains solvent, all deposits are up to date.
Matins (Edith): Deputy (Hannah): The submissions process continues. This month’s submissions include both those from within the Kingdom, those from GWW, and those from mid-year Known World Heralds Point.
Green Crown (Eilis): As far as she can tell, all Courts held at all three Western Principality Coronet/Investiture events have been properly reported and confirmed. This includes kingdom courts held at those events.
The search for the bag of court tabards continues. In the meantime, several of us are planning replacements to be ready by Spring Crown. The bag of ceremony books is with Anne FitzRichard, who will be reprinting and replacing the ceremonies.
Baldric (Gwenhwyfaer): Nothing to update at this time.
Archivist - several requests come through in the past month that required archive review. She was able to research
Brachet (Kean), Leveret (Ræv): No report received.
Green Cloak (vacant): This position oversees Field Heralds for the Kingdom events (Crown tourneys, Wars, etc.). If interested in this position, please contact Vesper.
Green Trumpet (vacant): This position will oversee Town Cry (formerly called Duty Shout) and Heralds Point (information). If interested in this position, please contact Vesper.
Green Banner (Aasa): She continues to do consultations and currently has several ongoing. She has recently acquired a digital copy of SSNO for Polish names, which is exciting, especially since one of her ongoing consultations is for a Polish name.
Golem (Hirsch): Not much to report. Picking up some old Oerthan Court Reports from old newsletters, everything else seems to be on track. Have a couple of things to look at on the administrative side for data entry, but should be easy fixes. Please review the Heralds’ site when you get a chance, it never hurts to find little things that can be improved.

The map had two Stargards. The one just east of the Oder River is the location of the modern Stargard. The map is of the lands just south of the Baltic Sea, with Dantzk [modern Gdansk] on the Vistula River near the east [right] end and Rostock [modern spelling is the same] near the west [left] end.

Per chevron azure and sable, a chevron embattled argent between three roses counterchanged Or and argent.
This is a resubmission of a device Returned on the July 2021 LoAR, redesigned at addressed the reasons for the return:
Per chevron embattled azure and sable, three roses counterchanged Or and argent.
This device is returned per SENA Appendix H, for use of a low-contrast complex line of division. For example, in the December 2018 return of the armory of Lucius Domitius Anatolius, Per bend sinister potenty azure and sable, three wolves courant in annulo argent, we said in part:
In some cases, even if there is no overlying charge, a low-contrast complex line of division may be unidentifiable and thus unregisterable. Similarly, in some cases, the specific shades used in a submission may render a low-contrast complex line of division unidentifiable and thus unregisterable, even if the combination has previously been registered.[...]
Appendix H specifically cites the combination of azure and sable in a complex line of division as unregisterable even without an overlying charge. [...]
Old Item: Ghislaine d'Auxerre, to be retained as an alternate name.
No major changes. Spelling (Triest, Trieste, or similar) most important.
Ghislaine is submitter's registered given name. (Ghislaine d'Auxerre, registered April 1992 via Caid)
Triest - Margaret Triest, married 19 Aug 1632, Weeford, Staffs, England, batch M00989-3, [https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NXBW-99C].
The English language name formation <given + byname> is found in SENA Appendix A.
This submission was processed through the mid-year Virtual Heralds Point.
Badge:
(Fieldless) A polypus Or maintaining in each tentacle a boot sable.
This submission was processed through the mid-year Virtual Heralds Point.
(Fieldless) A fox rampant contourny sable marked argent ravishing a goose argent.
This submission is to be associated with the name Fox Run Manor.
The household name was submitted as Foxrun Manor on West's 4/2021 LoI and the result should be on the 7/2021 LoAR. A badge with the same blazon was returned 4/1996: Conflict with Conrad Stronghand, Or, a wolf salient to sinister sable maintaining a rose gules barbed and seeded proper. There is a CD for fieldless v. fielded, but nothing for the type of canid, for the difference between rampant and salient, or for the type and/or tincture of the maintained charge. Conrad's badge was reblazoned in August 2002 as Or, a wolf counter-salient sable, maintaining in its mouth a rose gules, barbed and seeded proper. The O&A notes "Per ruling on June 2017 LoAR, the maintained rose is too small to be recognizable and does not count for difference"; however, the submitted badge is clear with a DC for fieldlessness and another for adding the maintained goose. This is technically new to Laurel even though the same badge was previously returned as the badge (Fieldless) A fox rampant contourney sable estencely and marked argent ravishing a goose argent was registered Feb 1997 using the free resubmission. It was released in Sept 1998.
This submission was processed through the mid-year Virtual Heralds Point.
No major changes.
Jillian is an English feminine given name dated to 1585 found in DMNES Jillian SaxhamSf p. 39 [https://dmnes.org/name/Juliana].
- Withycombe p. 134, under the header <Gillian>. Both <G> and <J> spellings very common in the Middle Ages.
de Navarre - from NCS “French Names from Paris, 1421, 1423, & 1438”, by Aryanhwy merch Catmael (Sara L. Uckelman) on the surnames page [http://heraldry.sca.org/names/french/paris1423surnames.html].
This name is an English given name + French locative, dates 290 years apart, and allowed by SENA App C.
This submission was processed through the mid-year Virtual Heralds Point.
Submitter desires a feminine name. Spelling (double L in the middle of Lillias) most important.
Lillias - a female given name found in "Dictionary of Tudor London Names" by Aryanhwy merch Catmael [https://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/english/tudorlondon.pdf] at p. 30 s.n. Lillias dated to 1582
Potter - an English surname found in "Name Distribution in King's Stanley Marriages: 1573-1600" by Mari ingen Briain meic Donnchada [http://medievalscotland.org/kmo/KingsStanley/SurnamesAlpha.shtml] dated to 1594 and 1598.
The submitter is aware of the possibility that this name might be considered to presume on the fictional character of Lily Potter from the Harry Potter book and movie series. The submitter believes her name should not presume because the fictional character was always known as Lily, not Lillias. Lillias also has one more syllable than Lily. However, if Pelican finds that this name presumes, the submitter consents to add the element "of Folkstone" to this name.
Folkstone - a period spelling of the modern English place name Folkestone, found at pp. 167-171 of A Perambulation of Kent: Conteining the Description, Hystorie, and Customes of that Shyre by William Lambarde, published in 1596 [https://books.google.com/books?id=oMVh6xLUsSoC].
This submission was processed through the mid-year Virtual Heralds Point.
Device:
Argent, a polypus gules and in chief two roses sable, a bordure sable platy.
This submission was processed through the mid-year Virtual Heralds Point.
Company of the Green Gryphon
Company - a designator used for household names per Appendix E of SENA. The spelling company is dated to 1450 in the Middle English Dictionary s.v. compaignie n.
This household name follows the pattern of names derived from inn signs in the form color + heraldic charge, as set out in "Alys's Simple Guide to Household Names" by Alys Mackyntoich [http://heraldry.sca.org/names/households.html].
Green - found in the MED s.v. senten v.(2) dated to 1460
The spelling gryffon for the heraldic charge is found in the Middle English Dictionary s.v. bek n.(3) dated to circa 1460: "Gryffon of goulys, armyd, with aseure bek and fet." This name conflicts with "Green Griffin, House of the," registered to Anna Moren in May of 2020 (via Caid). As the designator is different, this name would be registerable with permission to conflict under NPN3E.
The submitter would like to pursue permission to conflict from Anna Moren and the consulting herald has begun that process.
In the event that the submitter is not able to obtain permission to conflict, she consents to the addition of the element "of Folkstone" to clear the conflict.
Folkstone is a period spelling of the modern English place name Folkestone, found at pp. 167-171 of A Perambulation of Kent: Conteining the Description, Hystorie, and Customes of that Shyre by William Lambarde, published in 1596 [https://books.google.com/books?id=oMVh6xLUsSoC].
The pattern of adding place names to inn sign names was recognized in precedent in the September 2018 LoAR: "Heralds at the Pelican decision meetings found multiple examples of inn names that included place names, including Anker in East Smithfield, the syne of the Angell in Chepe, the Angel Taverne at Tower Hill, the Ship Taverne at Waping Wall, and the Bare Taverne in Greenwich." [Maximillian Elgin. Household name Black Sheep House of the North, 9/2018 LoAR, A-East]
This submission was processed through the mid-year Virtual Heralds Point.
Badge:
Argent, a gryphon segreant vert maintaining a rose gules slipped and leaved vert, a bordure sable.
This submission was processed through the mid-year Virtual Heralds Point.
Sable, three eyes in pale Or between flaunches plumetty argent and azure.
This is a Resubmission to Laurel, device returned Oct 2018:
Vert, an acanthus leaf issuant from base argent between flaunches plumetty azure and Or.
This device is returned for conflict with the device of Ioseph of Locksley, Vert, a tree eradicated argent. There is a DC for adding the flaunches. The acanthus leaf as depicted on the emblazon is indistinguishable from some period heraldic renditions of trees, and having the leaf issuant from base is worth no DC.
Old Item: Maryam bint Husam al Din, to be retained as an alternate name.
Sound (Miriam) most important. Meaning (for Braunholt (Brown)) most important.
The submitter will NOT accept MAJOR changes and cares about the gender (female) of the name.
Miriam - from Names of Jews in Rome In the 1550's, Table of Names Compiled by Yehoshua ben Haim haYerushalmi (MKA Zachary Kessin): <Miriam> [http://heraldry.sca.org/names/Jewish/rome_names.html#women].
Katerina - from Socin, p. 91, under the header <Katherina>, "Katerina, Schwester des Cüno advocatus Rubiacensis 1286 "[=sister of]; "Katerina Tochter des Ülricus dictus Verwer civis Basilensis 1290" [=daughter of], etc.
Braunholt - from Bahlow's Neiderdeutches Namenbuch, p.101 'Braunholt' dated 1467 see attached documentation.
The German name formation <double given+byname> is found in SENA Appendix A. Per SENA Appendix C, Italian and German are compatible.
Device:
Per bend sinister argent and azure, in bend a heart gules between two sinister
dragon’s wings counterchanged.
Or, a cipactli glyph, a bordure vert.
Submitted in Sept 2021, this was returned because the primary charge was multi-color in a way that could not be described. This has been addressed in the resubmission.
The submitter will NOT accept ANY changes.
Quintus - praenomen from "A Simple Guide to Imperial Roman Names" by Ursula Georges [https://heraldry.sca.org/names/roman.html#praenomen].
Servilius - nomen from "A Simple Guide to Imperial Roman Names" by Ursula Georges [https://heraldry.sca.org/names/roman.html#praenomen].
Scipio - cognomen from list of cognomens on "Roman Names, Selecting and Using your Roman Name" [http://wwww.legionxxiv/org/nomens/] found at [https://archive.org/details/studyofcognomina00dean/page/90/mode/2up].
The Roman language name formation <Praenomen + Nomen + Cognomen> is found in A Simple Guide to Imperial Roman Names by Ursula Georges [https://heraldry.sca.org/names/roman.html#praenomen].
Device:
Or, on a heart gules, a crescent Or.
Sable, a flame proper, in chief five mullets in chevron, a bordure argent.
Originally submitted this month as Sable, a flame proper between in chief five mullets in chevron and in base a chain ? argent. The submitter is a Knight, as of Sept. 2021 via the West [http://heralds.westkingdom.org/Awards/individual.php?namecode=7638], and is thus allowed the use of a chain.
But this has the same conflict as the July return, so the submitter updated it again, changing the chain to an argent bordure.
Previously submitted in March 2019 and July 2021, this is a redesign to clear the conflict found at that time:
Sable, a flame proper and in chief five mullets in chevron argent. This device is returned for conflict: William of Sark: Sable, a flame proper, registered January 1973.
There is one difference given for the addition of the secondary charge groups (the mullets), but two DCs are required to clear this conflict.
(Fieldless) A winged monkey segreant bendy argent and sable.
Old Item: Lyric of Cynagua, to be released.
Submitter desires a masculine name. Sound (son of Cynagua) most important.
Sean - dated to 1601 s.n. John, in "Names Found in Anglicized Irish Documents" by Mari ingen Briain meic Donnchada [http://medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnglicizedIrish/Masculine.shtml].
Sonne - dated to 1327, Reany & Wilson, p.417 s.n. Son.
of - English locative per SENA Appendix A.
Cynagua - SCA branch name, registered Oct. 1979.
The English naming pattern <given+byname+locative> is found in SENA Appendix A.
Per pale sable and azure, three chevronels braced and in chief an arrow fesswise argent.
This device was registered in July 2016, via Caid.
Note: this individual submitted a New Device, which was registered in August 2021. I failed to note that the form showed a Previous Device (Per pale sable and azure, three chevronels braced and in chief an arrow fesswise argent.) which was to be released upon registration of the new submission. This individual now has two Devices listed as Registered in the OandA. Please take the appropriate administrative action to Release the old device.
Many thanks and apologies,
