REPORTS

Vesper (Alizan): By the grace of Their Majesties her term as Vesper has been extended for one year. The term will end at Beltane in 2022. And yes, she is looking for a successor.

The role of Vesper is largely administrative. The incumbent does not need to know all the rules of heraldry, and training in the duties of the Vesper will be provided. However, the incumbent must be able and willing to step into any of several positions under them at a moment’s notice (not including consulting herald).

Requirements: The incumbent must be a paid member when they assume office, and must remain a paid member for the duration of their term. The incumbent must have the ability to: organize and run a court; organize announcements and ensure they are delivered; and organize field heralds. The incumbent or a representative must attend the Known World Heralds and Scribes symposiums in 2022 and 2023: travel costs are covered for those trips. And the incumbent should be able to attend Beltane Coronation 2022 and 2024.

Interested candidates should submit a resume’ that includes their SCA experience and any relevant modern experience to Vesper at Herald@westkingdom.org.

Special Report: KWHSS 2021 (Damir): We will be hosting Known World Heraldic and Scribal Symposium 2021 as a virtual event in July.

Event planning has begun. He is hopeful that our event website will be online in the coming week for people to propose classes and/or sign up to volunteer, so please keep an eye out.

Seawolf (Damir): They are hoping to have a Mists Coronet in September, possibly a day event. No events/activity to report other than our amazing scribes continuing to produce gorgeous scrolls, a few of which have been sent to me for signatures/seals. He is seeking a deputy/successor for this office, if you are interested please send your SCA resume to him at damir@westkingdom.org.

Sable Swan (Moira): Virtual May Coronet is coming up, there will be a court. Her warrant ends in July of next year, and she will begin seeking a deputy as soon as in-person events begin again.

Stellanordica (Caitriona): There are no major updates since March. We have had no events, and no courts with awards.

Khevron and Astrid continue to consult with folks working on names and devices (because they rock), but we aren't sure if any of those will have made it in for review at this weekend's meeting.

Beyond that, spring is coming to the north lands! Her trees and lawn are finally turning green.

Exchequer (Damir): The College remains solvent. No activity to report since last meeting. He is seeking a deputy/successor for this office. If you are interested please send your SCA resume to him at damir@westkingdom.org

Matins (Edith): Deputy (Hannah): Again, her thanks for all those who assisted with the April meeting. Submissions continue to be processed through the West. For all consulting and conflict checking heralds, please read the rules changes that have been included in the Cover Letters for recent LoARs.

Green Crown (Eilis): Damir the Blessed handled Court for March Crown, and that was the only Kingdom Court since our last meeting. Awards were all confirmed. He will be handling all virtual Courts for TRM until we are "live" again. And we are all grateful...

Baldric (Gwenhwyfaer): Nothing to report.

Brachet (Kean), Leveret (Ræv): Commenting continues. There is a major rule change on the latest LoaR which affects conflict checking, which we should all review. http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2021/03/21-03cl.html

Green Cloak (vacant): This position oversees Field Heralds for the Kingdom events (Crown tourneys, Wars, etc.). If interested in this position, please contact Vesper.

Green Trumpet (vacant): This position will oversee Town Cry (formerly called Duty Shout) and Heralds Point (information). If interested in this position, please contact Vesper.

Green Banner (Aasa): She has been doing some consulting and gets excited every time she gets to pull out a book from the library. She is planning to offer the consultation table at June Crown (she still needs to talk to the event steward about this).

Golem (Hirsch): The Rostering database is now set up to allow senior staff heralds the opportunity to send emails if needed to all or some of the heralds on the roster (a way to notify rostered heralds of announcements, etc.). It was also updated to enhance the code, the appearance, and so on.

Everything else is going along fine, there isn’t much to report, Court Reports are being processed when they come in fairly quickly, etc. All quiet on the Western front.

SUBMISSONS – May (2021)

ITEMS SENT TO LAUREL
Dagny the Blue (NEW Name & Device sent to Laurel)

The submitter cares about the sound (none noted) and the gender (female) of the name.

Dagny – from NCS Geirr Bassi: p. 9, lists <Dagr, <Dagfinnr>, <Dagstyrr>, <Dagvidr>, <Dageiðr>, and <Dagrún>. On the same page, Bassi lists <Eðny>, <Eirný>, and <Fastný>, as well as numerous other examples of the element <-ny> attached other initial elements.

- from the Viking Answer Lady: Dagný: For the first element Dag- see above. For the second element -ný see above. The name Dagný appears in the early 14th century legendary saga Þórsteins þáttr bæjarmagns as the mother of the title character. Citations CV pp. 94-95 s.v. dagr; NR s.v. -ný [http://www.vikinganswerlady.com/ONWomensNames.shtml].

Dag- - Dageiðr: The first element Dag- is identical to Old Icelandic dagr, "day". For the second element -eiðr see above. Citations: GB pp. 9; FJ pp. 348; CV pp. 94-95, 247 s.v. dagr, heiðr.

-ný - Ásný: For the first element Ás- see above. The second element -ný is from the the OW. Norse adjective nýr "new". This name appears in Landnámabók for Ásný, Víga-Sturludóttir in chs. 44 and 48; Ásný Vestarsdóttir in ch. 90; and Ásný Flosadóttir in ch. 94. Citations: GB pp. 8; FJ pp. 342; CV pp. 46 s.v. áss; NR s.v. -ný\.

- Cleasby, Richard and Guðbrandr vigfusson. An Icelandic-English Dictionary. 2nd ed. Oxford: Clarendon. 1957. pp. 94-95.

the Blue - there is an account of two brothers bynamed 'the White' and 'the Black' in Laxdæla Saga, (Image #2).

Along with the common 'inn Raudi'/'raudr' (the Red), this is believed to be enough to give the submitter the benefit of the doubt.

The Scandinavian name formation [given + byname] is found in SENA Appendix A. As per current Precedent, the submitter has elected to remove all accents and diacritical marks from all elements of the name.

The submitter has chosen to use the Lingua Societatis Allowance to translate the byname into modern English per SENA PN.1.B.2.c.

Armory:
Azure, a sheaf of three feathers within an orle argent.

Katherine Gotehird (NEW Badge & Badge sent to Laurel)

Badge 1:
Per saltire azure and vert, a delf erminois.

Badge 2:
Per chevron azure and vert, a chevron erminois cotised Or.

Katla in Harfagra (NEW Name sent to Laurel)

The submitter requests Authenticity for language and/or culture (11th-13th century Icelandic), and cares about the meaning (none noted) and the gender (female) of the name.

Katla – from NCS Geirr Bassi Bassi, p. 12.

- from Landnámabók Viking Settlers and their Customs pg 41.

in Hárfagra - (Fairhair).

- from NCS Geirr Bassi, p. 22, as <inn hárfagri>. The submitter has correctly changed the terminal "-i" to an "-a" and <inn> to <in> to form the feminine, per Bassi, p. 18-19.

- from Landnámabók Viking Settlers and their Customs pg 18.

- from ‘Viking Bynames found in the Landnámabók’ by Aryanhwy merch Catmael (Sara L. Uckelman): “While most of the bynames are used by both men and women, there are a few that take different forms depending on the gender. A good way to tell the difference is that the feminine forms will use the definite article in rather than inn, and will end in a instead of i, generally.” [http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/norse/vikbynames.html?fbclid=IwAR0x9Oen9YUhSKSYcthrTkttMWXY6ZaM1YSW3TqEgqQ46LZUvVR1z8NerPk]

The Scandinavian name formation [given + byname] is found in SENA Appendix A. As per current Precedent, the submitter has elected to remove all accents and diacritical marks from all elements of the name.

Sigurðr inn Ógæfa (Sigur{dh}r inn {O'}g{ae}fa) (NEW Name & Device sent to Laurel)

The submitter cares about the language and/or culture (Icelandic/Norwegian) and the gender (male) of the name.

Sigurðr – from NCS Geirr Bassi: p. 14.

- from Landnamabok - Ari the Learned pg 42, English translation.

inn ógæfa – from NCS Geirr Bassi: Bassi, p. 26, has <ógæfa> without the <inn>, as does the cited article by Aryanhwy.

From the West College: Bassi discusses the endings of bynames, depending on which category they fall into, on pp. 18-19. From Bassi’s discussion: <inn ógæfi> may be the correct form.

- from ‘Viking Bynames found in the Landnámabók’ by Aryanhwy merch Catmael (Sara L. Uckelman): ógæfa meaning unlucky [http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/norse/vikbynames.html?fbclid=IwAR0x9Oen9YUhSKSYcthrTkttMWXY6ZaM1YSW3TqEgqQ46LZUvVR1z8NerPk].

“While most of the bynames are used by both men and women, there are a few that take different forms depending on the gender. A good way to tell the difference is that the feminine forms will use the definite article in rather than inn, and will end in a instead of i, generally.”

The Scandinavian name formation [given + byname] is found in SENA Appendix A. As per current Precedent, the submitter has elected to KEEP all accents and diacritical marks for all elements of the name.

Armory:
Vert, in saltire an axe and a drinking horn contourny argent, in chief two ravens respectant, all within an orle Or.

Þýri Ávaldsdóttir (NEW Device sent to Laurel)

Azure, a comet bendwise sinister inverted Or bearded argent within a bordure denticulada argent.

There is a step from core practice for a comet with a head and beard of different tinctures.

Yrsa Olfuss (NEW Name & Device sent to Laurel)

The submitter cares about the meaning (none noted) and has no preference for the gender of the name.

Yrsa - from Geirr Bassi Haraldsson. The Old Norse Name. pp. 16 or [https://en.natmus.dk/historicalknowledge/denmark/prehistoric-period-until-1050-ad/the-viking-age/the-people/names/].

Olfuss - Bassi, p. 30 as <ǫlfúss>.

- from ‘Landnamabok Viking Settlers and Their Customs in Iceland’ by Ari Learned pg 41.

The Scandinavian name formation [given + byname] is found in SENA Appendix A. As per current Precedent, the submitter has elected to remove all accents and diacritical marks from all elements of the name.

Armory:
Vert, in fess a bear statant erect sable and an ash tree eradicated argent.

Note to submitter: the tree should not touch the bear.

Note on this submission: there is a problem of Contrast with having a sable bear on a vert field. The submitter had approved a change that would have resolved this, but Matins made an error when sending the submission forward and sent the original emblazon. The wonderful heralds of the SCA CoA noted the problem and immediately started providing research to use as an Individually Attested Pattern to allow this device to continue through the registration process. The submitter was contacted and decided they would prefer to continue with the original submission, if there was any chance it might go through, rather than to correct it to the version that did not include a Contrast issue.
