COLLEGE OF HERALDS MEETINGS
The March 2021 meeting was held in via remote teleconference.
There will be a special Heralds Meeting on Sunday, April 18 to consider the submissions processed
through the Virtual Heralds Point in February. Please comment on the ILoI in advance and be prepared for
a long meeting.
Meetings for 2021: May 16, July 18, September 19, November 7.
Meetings usually begin at 11:00 AM and will be held via online/remote teleconference until further notice
(see also: When/Where Are the
Next Meetings?).
The DEADLINES for submission forms and documentation are: 2021 Deadlines: May 5, July 7, September 8, October 27. Submission forms must be complete and received either via EMAIL or hardcopy by the deadline date at midnight to be considered at the next meeting (which is about 11 days later, except December due to holidays and the roadshow meeting prep time needed). If the forms are EMAILED, then payment must arrive by the meeting day. WALK-IN submissions will not be accepted while meetings are held via remote conference.
REPORTS
Vesper (Alizan): No major news to report this time. She has signed and sealed a few scrolls: Duchess Eliska is working on her backlog and brought two to her a few weeks ago. She is also sending cookies [cookie seals] to Lochac for some VERY backlogged scrolls that they're finishing for folks who received awards when it was still a Principality of the West. (She’s receiving photos of each scroll for review prior to them affixing seals and signatures.)
Kudos to those who continue to do the work of the College and to those who have been submitting their reports in a timely manner.
Special Report: KWHSS 2021 (Damir): We will be hosting Known World Heraldic and Scribal Symposium 2021 as a virtual event in July. He has sent missives to Laurel and the people who ran the last for some initial meetings and then he'll be asking for volunteers/bring in people who have already talked to him to begin gathering content/planning.
Seawolf (Damir): No events. Consultation is ongoing.
Sable Swan (Moira): They did have a virtual Cynaguan Investiture. A court happened, the report was filed and confirmed. She has been consulting, and had some submissions sent in.
Stellanordica (Caitriona): As with her last report, they have had no events nor awards given.
Khevron assisted with consultations but we aren't sure if the submissions will arrive in time for this weekend's meeting.
Wolfhound (Astrid): She participated in Virtual Heralds Point and learned tons of information on researching names and devices, conflict checking, and the Pennsic Table submissions process. She has assisted with 10+ submissions in the past few months and assisted with the Super Secret Scroll as well as another scroll.
Exchequer (Damir): Nothing to report, the College remains solvent and current with the College of Arms.
Matins (Edith): Deputy (Hannah): She volunteered at the CoA’s Virtual Heralds Point last month and enjoyed helping a variety of submitters. The Western submissions from this Point were uploaded into OSCAR for the West to process this weekend. We have 40+ items to consider. Matins suggests that we hold a Meeting in April just to process these submissions, meeting scheduled.
Submissions continue to come in through our standard process as well. Please be aware: if a submission is received, an email will be sent confirming this and noting any additional requirements (i.e. pending receipt of fees). If an email was not received (sent to the email that sent in the submission or to the email on the paper form), then Matins has not received your submission.
Thanks to Hannah for jumping in on a last-minute submission that would have been returned for conflict. She was able to suggest changes and get a response from the submitter in time for the updated submission to be included this month.
WKCoH email addresses: with the WK now having a Google account, is there any interest in changing the WK Heralds addresses over to ‘@westkingdom.org’ accounts, which could then function as full email accounts, rather than a forwarding tool? Golem will reach out to West IT team regarding this query.
Green Crown (Eilis): Damir the Blessed handled Court for 12th Night, and that was the only Kingdom Court since our last meeting. Awards were all confirmed. He will be handling all virtual Courts for TRM until we are "live" again. And we are all grateful...
Baldric (Gwenhwyfaer): Service Symposium happened, there was a Vesper open talk and a Consultation Table.
Brachet (Kean), Leveret (Ræv): Commenting continues.
Green Cloak (Ari Ella): No tourneys have occurred. She is moving out of Kingdom, and so must step out of this position: she is looking for a successor. Please reach out if interested.
This position oversees the field heralds for Crown tournaments and wars. If interested in this position, please contact Vesper.
Telynore and Alistair will temporarily take possession of the regalia and sunshade.
Green Trumpet (vacant): This position will oversee Town Cry (formerly called Duty Shout) and Heralds Point (information). If interested in this position, please contact Vesper.
Green Banner (Aasa): She had a great time volunteering with the Virtual Heralds Point in February. She is also working with the College of St David on a redesign of their arms. At Virtual March Crown in a couple of weeks, she will be teaching a youth class on visual heraldry.
Golem (Hirsch): In the last couple of months the final changes to the Awards List updates have been completed, mostly “behind the scenes” stuff, but making it easier for Golem to update information that is used/displayed on various pages of the Awards List, as little or nothing is hard-coded into the program code anymore.
Court Reports, when they happen, continue to come in, mostly in a timely fashion. That’s about it.
New Business:
The office of Green Cloak is coming vacant and needs a successor.
With the furor over the knighting in Atlantia relating to the Buffet, the College will be addressing potential changes to the West's ceremony. Please send comments and suggestions to Vesper or via https://padlet.com/arielawanderingwares/41knbaxfzycc8aik.
2022 Meetings schedule: to be scheduled: Sunday January 9th (at Twelfth Night). Further meetings will have to wait until the Kingdom Calendar is published with the Kingdom & Principality events.

SUBMISSONS – March (2021)
ITEMS SENT TO LAUREL
Household name: House Tundra Weasel
The West College requests assistance documenting this name.
**comments**
Astrith - Collected recent precedents on household name formations can be found at
[http://heraldry.sca.org/names/resources/household.html].
Per SENA NPN. Non-Personal Names and the precedents listed at the above URL, the name of a household using the designator <House> can be based on the forms used for inn signs, personal names, ancestor names, and place names.
Summary: House of Weasel, Weasel’s House would be acceptable, or something like House of the Weasel, House of the Red Weasel. No documentation found for ‘Tundra’.
Derelei - could get <House of the Tendre Weasel> or <Tendre Weasel House>.
Research she completed shows that the most common modifier for an animal is a color, i.e. <White Weisel>.
Badge: Sable, a weasel’s pawprint ermine.
There is a step from period practice for the use of a paw print.
Household name: Hawke’s House
Submitted as <Hawkes House> the West College added an apostrophe as per Alys's Simple Guide to Household Names, by Mistress Alys Mackyntoich [http://heraldry.sca.org/names/households.html]: “English household names are often derived from personal names. As with other household patterns in English, the pattern is X('s) House or House of X, not House X.”
Badge: (Fieldless) In pale a hawk’s leg erased à la quise belled and jessed Or, maintaining an annulet argent.
This is a joint badge with Isabella Hawke. There is a step from period practice for the use of a paw print.
Alternate Name: Danger Mappet
The submitter does not care about gender and marked no other boxes.
Danger - from NCS FamilySearch Antany Danger, 29 Sep 1578, Braunstone, Leicester, England, FamilySearch record M03439-1 [https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NVVZ-HZB].
Mappet - from NCS FamilySearch John Mappett, 1 Jan 1614, Leake, Lincoln, England, FamilySearch record C02978-2 [https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2QQ-KHHV].
The English name formation <given + byname> is found in SENA Appendix A. English surnames may be used as given names per the precedents of April 2010 and Sept 2012.
Comments: Derelei - Confirmed spelling of <Mappett> in the citation given. Note that the documented spelling has a double tt at the end whereas the desired spelling stated has a single t. There is an entry from 1604 for <Mappet> with a single t with a photo (I could not sufficiently make out the handwriting on my device to confirm: "England, Sussex, Parish Registers, 1538-1910", database, FamilySearch [https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2QQ-KHHV], Thomas Mappet, 1604.) and 1620 for <Mappet> with the single t from another case-by-case batch code: I05281-0. Is there precedent for freely interchanging "tt" and "t" for 16th - early 17th cen. English names?
Badge 1: (Fieldless) A goat’s head couped sable, distilling from its neck a goutte de sang.
Badge 2: Lozengy argent and sable, two wolves rampant addorsed purpure and gules.
Alternate Name: Prise Party
The submitter does not care about gender and marked no other boxes.
Prise - from NCS FamilySearch Elsabeth Prise, 5 Apr 1587, St Martin, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England, FamilySearch record B05876-8 [https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JDQ7-RYW].
Party - from FamilySearch Margret Party, 4 Aug 1597, Barnham Broom, Norfolk, England, FamilySearch record I07339-9 (name is legible in the accompanying document) [https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NJ99-468].
The English name formation <given + byname> is found in SENA Appendix A. English surnames may be used as given names per the precedents of April 2010 and Sept 2012.
Badge: Azure mullety of six points Or, a pile inverted bendy sinister argent and gules.
There was some discussion of the number of bars needed for the pile to qualify as <bendy> so the submitter added an additional stripe, updating the emblazon from the original submission.
Per chevron purpure mullety argent and argent, in pale a decrescent argent and a pomegranate gules slipped and leaved vert.
This device was Returned at Kingdom level at the July 2020 meeting, with the comments:
“as this is not a per-chevron field, as the line of division is too low, and neither is it a point,
as for that charge the line is too high. The West College also recommends the pomegranate redrawn and
depicted as a period image (and especially with no leaves behind the pomegranate). Possibility: move
the pomegranate up, can also make it larger (which would make this the primary charge, and the
decrescent the secondary).”
The submitter has sent in a new emblazon that addresses the concerns.
The submitter will NOT accept MAJOR changes and cares about the meaning (last name is personal, first name really depends on the options) and gender (male) of the name.
Symon - from NCS website: Sixteenth Century Norman Names by Catline de la Mor, "Simon" Paris 1438 [http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/french/paris1408.html] (approximately 1/3 of the way down the page); Lallaing - 1412-1556 [http://heraldry.sca.org/names/lallaing/lallaing_names_masculine_given.html#r] (near the last quarter of the page);
- from NCS Academy of St. Gabriel report # 1719 "Symon" [http://www.s-gabriel.org/1719].
Montgomery - my mother's maiden name. Documentation can be found at [http://www.panix.com/~gabriel/public-bin/showfinal.cgi?2638+0] (fourth paragraph); [https://www.s-gabriel.org/names/cateline/norman16.html] (approximately 3/4 of the way down the page); Sir John Montgomery who captured Harry Hotspur in 1388 [http://www.englishmonarchs.co.uk/battle_otterburn.html] (approximately 2/3 of the way down the page).
de Lisieux - a Catholic diocese located in northwestern France as early as 1100 and continuing to be called this to the modern day. See ‘Arnulf of Lisieux’ as discussed in ‘Medieval primary sources’, Lancaster University [https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/staff/haywardp/hist424/seminars/Lisieux.htm?fbclid=IwAR2oYQBooNFUNmKXWaDICEvKE6nOc48GDkTEE4XHP64zcEc58FsEfyV40sE].
The French name formation [given + byname + locative] can be found in SENA Appendix A.
Device:
Or, a bear’s paw print, on a chief azure three acorns Or.
There is a step from period practice for the use of the paw print.
RETURNS
None.
