REPORTS
Vesper (Alizan): From the Principal Heralds Meeting at KWHSS, a reminder to commenters: be kind, don't snark. She will let Damir report on the event itself.
In a side meeting it was noted that one kingdom expressly invites submitters to the meeting when their submission is being discussed. Do we want to start doing that?
At Crown she will test a new Green Trumpet concept - a free-standing banner for announcements. We will have 3x5 cards for people to write the announcements, and safety pins for attaching them to the banner.
Current vacancies: Green Trumpet, Green Cloak, and Compline. Recruitment announcements have been posted. Interested candidates should submit a resume that includes their SCA experience and any relevant modern experience to Vesper at Herald@westkingdom.org.
Special Report: KWHSS 2021 (Damir):
We had a symposium! Aside from a few minor hiccups, he thinks everything went very well. Most of the
feedback collected to date also supports this. The team is working on getting the class videos on the
Kingdom YouTube page and then they’'ll publish a proceedings page with links to the videos and
handouts for easy reference/access. This info will then be provided to the COA for publishing on their
website. His list of thanks is too extensive to list here, but he highly recommends visiting the
thank-you page on the symposium website (http://kwhss.sca.org)
to see all of the amazing gentles who made this event happen.
Seawolf (Damir): No activities since last meeting. He’s begun pre-planning for Coronet and has spammed the Principality looking for a deputy/successor. Interested candidates please e-mail him your SCA resume and a brief statement of intent/about yourself.
Sable Swan (Moira): Cynaguan Coronet is coming the first weekend in October. Their Highnesses have decided to not hold a Virtual ‘coronation’
Stellanordica (Caitriona): As Oertha is still are not holding events, she has minimal items to report. Khevron and Astrid continue to work with submitters. And she wanted to also note her thanks for the work that Rodrigo de Reinosa did - he stepped up to do field heraldry for two days of demos recently held at a local fair in Anchorage.
She is still seeking a replacement for Stellanordica, so please keep that in the "jobs available" listings!
Exchequer (Damir): The West College remains solvent and our account with the College of Arms is still running a positive balance. He will be working on the Q2 reports as soon as possible. (Possibly during this meeting.)
Discuss PayPal as a payment option, approved by the BoD: this requires an update to the Kingdom Financial Policy.
Matins (Edith): Deputy (Hannah): The submissions process continues to happen. Thank you to all the various heralds throughout the Kingdom that have been working with submitters!
On a suggestion/example raised at the Submissions Heralds meeting at Known World, Matins is considering starting a small team to manage the various parts of the submissions process together. Please watch for more info to come.
If you know someone who likes administrative work and is looking for things to do in the SCA, please let her know. All of these tasks can be completed remotely via shared files, etc. Training and support will be offered, and the team will regularly gather to review and discuss the overall process.
From the SCA College of Arms: there will be another Virtual Heralds Point in August (next month). Submitters must pre-register by August 5th, volunteer must sign up by July 31. There will be a Zoom event August 14-15 and the final deadline for payment is September 15. See [http://heraldry.sca.org/heraldspoint/]
Green Crown (Eilis): Damir remains a saint, but will not be running Court Heraldry at September Crown/Coronation. She needs to know of anyone who has been asked to serve as Herald during an elevation (currently three planned for the event). For anyone who is interested in serving as Court Herald for the event, please reach out to Eilis.
No big changes to the ceremonies.
Baldric (Gwenhwyfaer): Nothing to report at this time, but she requests direction from the College for upcoming training requests.
Suggested to have both voice & field herald training on-sight at September Crown. She is going to start organizing. There will be the Crown Tourney on Saturday, a Rapier Champion and a Youth Combat tourney on Sunday.
Brachet (Kean), Leveret (Ræv): Commenting continues. He’s also been getting some consulting done.
He would like to get a Brachet Meeting set up. He will consider which technology would best facilitate this. Possibly Discord, though setting up a whole server for that purpose seems excessive.
Green Cloak (vacant): This position oversees Field Heralds for the Kingdom events (Crown tourneys, Wars, etc.). If interested in this position, please contact Vesper.
Anne fitzRichards is going to serve in this capacity for September Crown.
Green Trumpet (vacant): This position will oversee Town Cry (formerly called Duty Shout) and Heralds Point (information). If interested in this position, please contact Vesper.
Green Banner (Aasa): No report received.
Golem (Hirsch): Nothing new to report. Things haven’t changed much.
He has tried reaching out to the College of Arms archivist a few times, as he’d like to finish the project of getting older armory in the Who’s Who, but hasn’t heard back. He is aware the Archivist is dealing with some mundane issues. Otherwise, court reports, when courts have happened, have been timely, and they’ve been confirmed pretty quickly as well. Minor bugs fixed in the awards list database software, but mostly things most people wouldn’t see … that’s about it.

SUBMISSONS – July (2021)
ITEMS SENT TO LAURELNew Alternate Name submission: Very Grym.
The submitter will NOT accept MAJOR changes, cares about the sound (none noted), and has no gender preference for the name.
Very - from NCS FamilySearch B batch: William Very, male, died nov 1593 in Salisbury, Wildshire, England batch B05876-8 [https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903?1:1:JDQ7-Y57].
There is also a birth listing for a William Very in 1591 that is probably the same person. The father is listed as both <Thomas Very> and <Thomas Verye>. Another William Very married in Clerkenwell, London, in 1600 [Batch M00141-1].
Reaney & Wilson, under the header <Verrrey> on p. 466, have variant spellings dating to 1202 and 1641, but do not have the submitted spelling.
Grym - from NCS FamilySearch M-0 batch: Peter Grym, male married 1585 om Burnsall, Yorkshire, England, batch M00903-1 [https://familysearch.org/ar:/61903/1:1:NL6S-GNG]
There are multiple listings in FamilySearch for the surname <Grym> in the English records from the late 1500s and the early 1600s.
Reaney & Wilson show multiple examples of <Grim> on pp. 206-207 under the header <Grime>, including Edricus Grim 1066, Bernard Grim 1170 & 1183, Thomas Grym 1309; John Gryme 1347.
The English name formation <given + byname> is found in SENA Appendix A. The use of late-period English bynames as given names is acceptable per Precedent from the September 2012 LoAR.
The submitter previously went by the name Fojhum Ap Mabon, unregistered.
The submitter cares about the spelling ("Would like to keep the Montgomery as I naturally go by Monty"), language and/or culture (none noted), and gender (male) of the name.
The submitter requests Authenticity for 15th Century English/Welsh
Montgomery - from NCS FamilySearch, grey period, M-0 batch: Montgomery Watford, married May 1639, London St. Bride’s Church Fleet Street, Middlesex, England [https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NJZ2-W8V].
Cadigan - from the International Surname Database: Cadogan [https://www.surnamedb.com/Surname/Cadogan]. This spelling is cited under the header <Cadogan> both for an Irish family in 1341 and for a Welsh family in 1292. The Gormanston Register [the Irish citation] mentions several Cadigans on p. 113. That source is available at [https://archive.org/details/cu31924028073173/mode/2up].
This spelling is cited under the header <Cadogan> both for an Irish family in 1341 and for a Welsh family in 1292. The Gormanston Register [the Irish citation] mentions several Cadigans on p. 113. The source is available at [https://archive.org/details/cu31924028073173/mode/2up].
The English name formation Ult;given + byname> can be found in SENA Appendix A. English and Anglicized Irish are in the same regional naming group and compatible with Gaelic per SENA Appendix A.
(Fieldless) A brown hyena passant proper spotted sable, maintaining a sword proper.
The submitter will NOT accept MAJOR changes and cares about the sound (none noted) and gender (male) of the name.
Séamus - Séamus is an Irish man's name beginning from around the 13th-14th centuries. It is the Gaelic form of James. Academy of Saint Gabriel mentions "Séamus" in several reports. Report number 1534 discusses the spelling and pronunciation of the name and Report number 1582 discusses how the name eventually entered Gaelic and the Irish name pool. The submitter found over 10 such reports and other references linked off of St. Gabriel's and Laurel's sites.
the Shameless - Irish naming practices allow for the inclusion of descriptive by-names. The SENA Section of Laurel's site mentions that Descriptive Gaelic by-names do not need documentation (See Appendix A - Gaelic - http://heraldry.sca.org/sena.html#AppendixA).
The online Dictionary of the Irish Language has the Gaelic <anbal>, meaning "shameless, unabashed; impudent, audacious". But there are no dates cited and all the cited sources are modern works. They may be discussing period Gaelic, but that is impossible to substantiate without finding and reading the cited sources.
The compact edition of the OED, p. 621, dates a similar definition of "shameless" to 1225.
Although most of the attested descriptive bynames in Gaelic are for hair color, complexion, or size," Dated Names Found in Ó Corráin & Maguire's Irish Names" by Mari ingen Briain meic Donnchada (Kathleen M. O'Brien) [http://medievalscotland.org/kmo/ocm/OCM-DesByn.shtml] has one attested name where the description means "[the] proud, arrogant, overbearing" Thus we have an example where the description is for a personality trait.
If the name were all in Gaelic, it would be <Seamus anbal> [or whatever form of <anbal> is used as a descriptor.] The submitter is either using the rules from Appendix C to combine Gaelic and English or is using the PN.1.B.2.c. Lingua Societatis Allowance to translate the Gaelic <anbal> into modern English.
There's additionally a whole category of "Personality/Behavior" bynames in Index of Names in Irish Annals: Masculine Descriptive Bynames by Mari Elspeth nic Bryan, including: Deceitful/Guileful/Treacherous/Crafty (Meablach) Grievous/Troublesome/Difficult (Docair) Greedy/Ravenous (Cíocarach) Grim/Surly/Morose/Gloomy (Gruamdha) Proud/Arrogant/Overbearing (Sotal) Quarrelsome/Contentious (Amhreaidh) Wicked/Criminal/Sinful/Lewd (Colach) [https://medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnnalsIndex/DescriptiveBynames/Topic.shtml#Personality].
Given all that, a reasonable Irish byname that could translate (via Lingua Societatis) to "the Shameless" appears to fit the pattern. (And honestly, the resulting alliteration / sound play would slide into an Irish poetic form quite nicely.)
The Irish name formation <given + descriptive byname> is acceptable per SENA Appendix A. SENA Appendix B allows for Irish Gaelic (Old, Middle, and Early Modern) to be combined with English/Welsh name elements.
Originally Returned on the Feb 2020 LoAR with the comments: Device. Argent, a coney sejant erect to sinister azure. This device is returned for conflict with the device of Hroswitha von Lippe, Quarterly sable and Or, a rabbit rampant contourny azure. There is a DC for change to the field, but nothing for change in posture from rampant to sejant erect.
The submitter has added an additional charge group to clear the conflict.
Argent, a coney sejant erect contourny azure and in chief five mullets in chevron vert.
The submitter will NOT accept MAJOR changes and cares about the language and/or culture (none noted) and gender (female) of the name.
Sinead is a 13th century Irish woman's given name. See NCS Academy of St Gabriel report #1761. This is specifically noted in the 8th paragraph [http://www.s-gabriel.org/1761].
Sinead is noted in "The Origin and Meaning of the Name" Jane, Jennet, Jenny from "Irish Names and Surnames" by Rev. Patrick Woulfe, pg 43 Alphabetical list of Christian Names of Women with their Irish Forms.
inghean is a common patronymic form meaning "daughter of " for 13th century and later names.
Fhearghusa is the lenited genitive form of "Fearghus". This is the late period medieval spelling found on Mediveal Scottland for Irish Forms of their name. [http://medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnnalsIndex/Masculine/Fearghus.shtml] This spelling is given under the Spellings section Early Modern Irish Gaelic (c1200 -c1700) genitive form. The "H" after the "F" indicated linitian. Fherghusa is the linited genitive form for Old & Middle Irish (c700-c1200) http://www.s-gabriel.org/1381. 'I prefer the Early Modern Irish form "Fhearghusa" but will accept the other spelling if necessary.'
The Early Modern Gaelic name formation <given + inghean + patronymic> is shown in SENA, Appendix A.
Notes: The lenited form for early modern Gaelic is <Fearghusa>, with the "a" in the first syllable, but without an "h" following the "F". Mari does not show any lenited forms with an "Fh-". However, the ASG report cited indicates that feminine names lenite to "Fh-". both in the given name and the patronymic. "Quick and Easy Gaelic Names" by Sharon L. Krossa [Effric Neyn Ken3ocht Mcherrald] [http://medievalscotland.org/scotnames/quickgaelicbynames/] does not discuss the change from "F-" in masculine names to "Fh-" in feminine names, but one of her examples shows this lenition in the patronymic.
The West concludes that the submitter's choice of a given name is late period, so the submitter's prefered spelling for the patronymic, the later period spelling <Fhearghusa>, would be the best choice.
This device change submission was considered at the April 2021 West meeting, and was returned for the use of a previously unregistered charge for which no documentation was provided: commonly modernly called a kusarigama: Sable, a kusarigama within a hexagon of bamboo staves Or.
The submitter has worked with a herald to provide a re-submission that does not include a kusarigama.
Sable, a sickle bendwise sinister reversed within a hexagon of bamboo staves Or.
Old Item: Per pale azure and gules, a pale per fess Or and argent, overall a sword fesswise proper, to be retained as a badge.
Populace Badge, with approval of the Baroness, Seneschal, Exchequer, and Herald
(Fieldless) A flounder naiant to sinister paly azure and Or.
The submitter will NOT accept ANY changes and cares about the language and/or culture (Jewish, 10th C) and gender (male) of the name.
Yosef & Shimon - from the College of St Gabriel article “Names of Jewish Men, 6th to 11th Centuries” by jstamp@netvision.net.il [https://www.s-gabriel.org/names/juetta/sixth.html] documents both names (Yosef/Shimon) in chosen period.
ben- per SENA Appendix A for Jewish patronymics.
Shimon - a transliteration of the Hebrew Shin-Mem-Ayin-Vav-Nun found as a masculine given name in 1096 Rhineland and in South Germany in 1298 (cited in Alexander Beider's A Dictionary of Ashkenazic Given Names, 2001). It is the name of the second son of Jacob and Leah, mentioned in Genesis 29:33.
The Jewish name formation <given + marked patronymic> can be found in SENA Appendix A.
RETURNS
The submitter will NOT accept MAJOR changes, and cares about the spelling (none noted), language and/or culture (none noted), and gender (female) of the name.
Catriona - from “Problem Names Revisited”, by Alys Mackyntoich (2016)
"Catriona had previously been treated as an undocumentable Gaelic-English hybrid. [Catrina of Whitemoor, 10/01, A-Meridies]. However, this spelling is found in the Family Search Historical Records from England: CATRIONA CLOTHIER; Female; Christening; 14 Oct 1621; Alford, Somerset, England; Batch: P01953-1" [http://heraldry.sca.org/kwhss/2016/SCA%20Problem%20Names%20Revisited.pdf].
Macrath - p. 560 in [Black] Black, George F. The Surnames of Scotland.
The English name formation <given + byname> can be found in SENA Appendix A. English and Scottish name elements can be combined per SENA Appendix C.
Returned: Conflict on the name: “Catríona Macraith” This name was registered in April of 1994 (via Atlantia). With the possible variety of pronunciations, this name is a conflict.
Armory:
Per pale azure and vert, a hedgehog argent.
No conflict was found for the device, but without a name the submission cannot continue and must also be returned.
Gules two arrows palewise and a decrescent argent impaled with checky sable and Or.
This device is returned for the appearance of Marshalling as per SENA A.6.F. There are a variety of possible ways to alter this design to remove the appearance of marshalling, including moving the charges so they are centered, with the decrescent crossing the per-pale line of division. The West College recommends the submitter work with a Herald prior to resubmission.
SENA A.6.F: Claims through Marshalling: Marshalling is the combination of two or more arms into a single design. By doing so, it makes a claim about the person that we do not allow in registered arms. This claim can be to a marital or inheritance relationship or about an office that the person holds. In some cases, such designs may be displayed, even though they cannot be registered.
…
Arms combined using the per pale field division generally combined either marital arms or the arms of an individual and an office. They are often called impaled arms and were not inherited. The display of registered arms impaled to show a marital relationship is encouraged, even though it is not registerable.
Suggested: Argent, a Cosalot proper sustaining a pen and a paintbrush within a bordure sable a tressure of three conjoined bands gules, azure, and Or.
This badge is returned for a variety of reasons, see below. When working on resubmissions for the badge, we recommend the submitter work with a Herald to ensure all the rules of the College of Arms are followed and to review possible conflicts in advance. Please let us know if the submitter would like to be put in contact with a Herald for this purpose.
The West College appreciates the research of period armory that was included with this submission.
First, this device includes a bordure with a multi-tinctured banded edge, listed on the submission as a tressure. A tressure is a special form of an orle, which is an ordinary under the rules of the College of Arms. A bordure is also an ordinary. Ordinarys may not be placed on top of one another, so the tressure cannot be on top of or touching the edge of the bordure. Additionally, the tressure was tinctured as three bands of different tincture. A tressure is a doubled-orle with a gap between the two bands that reveals the field behind, not three conjoined bands of different tinctures.
Next, the tincture on the edge of the bordure that touches the field is Or and the field tincture is argent. This is putting a metal on a metal and violates the rules of contrast.
Next, the primary charge on the badge is a 'Cosalot'. As listed in the submission, "a 'Cosalot proper' is a mythical beast, essentially an ocelot but with markings filled in with the 3 primary colors, yellow, blue, and red plus black. In addition, the claws are also yellow, blue, red, and black". To date, there has not been a registration of a Cosalot or a proper tincture for one with the SCA College of Arms. This means that documentation of the charge in period must be provided for registration of the first instance. Typically, this will require multiple examples of the image from original sources dated pre-1600. No such documentation was included with the submission and the West College was unable to provide any to support the registration of this charge.
Finally, the base tincture of the Cosalot is argent. This is also the tincture of the field the Cosalot is on. This is a violation of the rules of contrast.
Previously submitted in March 2019, the device was Returned by the West College with the comments:
Sable, a bend vert fimbriated between two mullets argent.
This submission is in conflict with the previously registered: Tigernán Ó Fáeláin, device registered Feb. 2003, via Atlantia: Sable, on a bend vert fimbriated between two mullets of four points elongated to base a wolf statant argent.
There is one Difference for the addition of the wolf, but two such Differences are required to clear conflict. (There is no Difference between mullets of five points and mullets of four points elongated to base.)
The submitter has completely reworked the design and sent in a resubmission:
Sable, a flame proper and in chief five mullets in chevron argent.
Returned for conflict: William of Sark: Sable, a flame proper, registered January 1973.
There is one difference given for the addition of the secondary charge groups (the mullets), but two DCs are required to clear this conflict.
Possible solutions: Sable, two mullets argent and a flame proper. Alternately Sable, three mullets in fess argent and a flame proper.
