COLLEGE OF HERALDS MEETINGS
Heralds' Meetings for 2018: July 1, September 30, November 18, and January 6, 2019 (Sunday of Twelfth Night). Heralds' Meetings for 2019: March 10, May 19, July 21, September 15, and November 17. Meetings usually begin at 11:00 AM and will be held at Green Crown's home unless otherwise noted.

The DEADLINES for submission forms and documentation are: June 20, September 19, November 7, and December 19. For 2019: 2019: February 27, May 8, July 10, September 4, and November 6. Submission forms must be complete, and received either via EMAIL or hardcopy by the deadline date at midnight to be considered at the next meeting (which is about 11 days later, except December due to holidays and the roadshow meeting prep time needed). If the forms are EMAILED, then payment must arrive by the meeting day. WALK-IN submissions will only be considered if there is time, but in most cases will be delayed until the next meeting so that each submission can be reviewed fully.

REPORTS

Vesper (Aasa); Compline (Alizan): Quarterly report to Laurel coming up, great timing to get updates from the meeting reports. Roster Letters still need to go out, so watch for those in the near future. Working with Compline, training, still have nearly a year left before she hands off the office.

Seawolf (Kean): Investiture occurred, no one died.

Sable Swan (Caoilinn): In the last two months, the main thing to note in our fair Principality is the loss of a Heraldic officer in the Shire of Danegeld Tor, as the officer had to step down due to personal reasons. After checking with official requirements, it was determined that the Shire does not need an official Herald, so the Seneschal will contact me directly in matters heraldic.

Other than that, the Heraldic volunteers are slowly increasing, and we are getting ready for Spring Coronet.

Stellanordica (Rodrigo): no report received

Exchequer (Angus): no report received

Matins (Edith): Continuing to receive forms colored in some other method than colored marker, a few went to the old address this time, and names are continuing to come in without name formation documentation. But, submissions are coming in, being processed, LoIs going up, and registrations showing in LoARs.

Green Crown (Krysta): Continuing low-key back-end support of the College, while working on more urgent jobs within the Kingdom (i.e. Seneschal) but is still available and able to assist.

Banner (Anne); Emergency Deputy: Eilis: Courts occurred, Coronation happened. All court reports from Coronation have been submitted.

Uther and Kara want to run very short courts. Especially regarding announcements which will be read by the herald (with no embellishments), unless it is for a Kingdom level event or Their Majesties have given specific permission for someone to come forward and make their own announcement.

Technical note to Golem: when accessing the court reporting page through a saved URL link, when select to submit the report receives error message: 'page not found'. To get around this: go to the main West Kingdom College of Heralds page and click in to the court reporting form, rather than using a cached page. (From Golem: problem was a bookmark to the old court report page, which still existed, but the "processing" page did not ... please update bookmarks to the current location on the Awards List site.)

Baldric (Lucius): Still waiting for a couple of classes for Collegium but moving along. Just about ready to start the track for the fall Kingdom A&S Tourney classes. Has had a few requests for training at events, he gave out his contact information and asked them to contact him, after which he does not hear anything.

Brachet (Cynehild): Announcing our new Bratchet Herald, Cynhild Cynesigesdohtor! During the past month, she has been distracted by mundane concerns, but is working to learn the job. If we want her to do more commenting, let her know.

Greencloak (Mercy): Deputy: Elinora, Successor: Safiya (planned office turnover Twelfth Night 2019): She will be at the College of St. David's on the evening of May 30 to assist with name consultation and would appreciate the assistance of anyone else who can attend.

She plans to change up training, working with Lucius. There have been some issues training heralds AT tourneys. The current thought is to do group training, heraldic games, etc.

His Majesty has decided to start June Crown with six fields open. For any voice heralds who will be at June Crown and willing to serve as field heralds, please let her know in advance so that she can pre-fill her schedule.

Suggestion: third-round duty shout: "Retrieve your banners and Consultation Table is open."

At Herald's Point, the book should be out and open for people to walk up and write in their announcements, business, etc. This needs to be advertised and reinforced so that people get back in the habit of doing so.

Latimer (Astrið): Table was at March Crown and Mists Spring Coronet. We had clients at both, and enjoyed getting to know Geneviefve d'Estelle, a recent transplant from Gleann Abhann.

Sine ni Mharbhen has volunteered to run Table at Cynagua Spring Coronet, when neither Latimer nor her backup will be in attendance. Any and all support to assist Sine will be appreciated! (Gwyn and Flieg volunteer to assist, and Gwyn will bring some of the Table's books.)

Neither Latimer nor her back-up will be at June Crown. Anyone who is willing to run Table for this event can reach out and arrange for the books to be handed off in advance.

Golem (Hirsch): New version of the Awards List is going really well. New feature: mouse over the armory anywhere on the List and you will get a larger image. Except for the note from Banner at this meeting, he has received no commentary on any issues.

From the Unbelts List, via Carreck: Helga posted on the FB group encouraging people to work on name and device registration. This resulted in a LARGE conversation about submissions on that List and may result in an added need for consultation.

For the (unofficial event) 'June 2018 Equally Inconvenient Practice' on June 3, 2018 in Coalinga, Astrið, Edith, and Anne all volunteer to travel down and run a full consultation table.

For the next Meet & Beat, at Ducal, who will be available to help run a Consultation Table? Request for Carreck to pass on that there will be a consultation table open at Ducal to assist anyone interested. Also, to encourage people to reach out in the West Kingdom Heralds FB group.

February 2018 LoAR (printed April 30, 2018) (West November, 2017 LOI)

Cover Letter

From Laurel: Clarion Herald

I'm pleased to announce that Milesenda de Bourges has agreed to take on the job of Clarion Herald. Milesenda is the prior Triskele Herald of Trimaris and a long time herald and scribe. She is the current Baroness of Darkwater in Trimaris, a member of the Order of the Laurel and has been a professional educator for over a decade. She looks forward to bringing her education expertise to this role.

I want to thank Marie de Blois for her many years of hard work. I've depended on her both as a Sovereign and personally for longer than I can say. She'll continue to work on some projects around precedence and continue to hold her personal title, Honnesteté Plus Que Tout Herault.

From Wreath: Manos, the Hands of Fatima

On the September 2017 Cover Letter, we requested period examples of the artistic motif of the hand of Fatima. This was in response to a handful of recent submissions that contained the motif, which had appeared in SCA heraldry as early as 1971 in the device of Yusef Metin el Rumi, but had never been documented. The charge is typically depicted in SCA heraldry as a stylized hand with the outer digits turning outward at the tips in vertical symmetry, either couped close or with a small, tapered point in lieu of a wrist. Preliminary searches for period artwork didn't turn up period images that had these characteristics, so we asked commenters to do a more thorough search.

While many commenters assisted in this search, we are particularly indebted to the efforts of ffride wlffsdotter. The results of the search found the following commonalities and variations on Hands of Fatima in period artwork:

SENA requires that charges in SCA heraldry be depicted in a period style, and be reproducible from the blazon. The common depiction of the hand of Fatima in SCA heraldry does not meet the former requirement, and period depictions are too varied for the term to reliably meet the latter requirement.

Therefore, we will cease use of the term "hand of Fatima" in armory submissions. Armory featuring stylized hands of Fatima appearing on external letters of intent dated after June 30, 2018 will be blazoned simply as "a hand," and will be registered only if the depiction is recognizable as a hand and follows period exemplars. Modern depictions of hands of Fatima and designs which are not identifiable as hands will be returned.

From Pelican: Alternative Titles

The November 2017 Palimpsest Letter proposed multiple changes to the alternative titles list.

We approve Magnifico as a masculine Italian peerage title. Thus, it is reserved for members of the Order of the Laurel, Pelican, Defense, or Chivalry, including Masters of Arms. We are also making the feminine form, Magnifica, an official Italian peerage title. This title is also reserved for members of these four peerage orders.

We approve Doge, together with its Venetian form Doxe, as a masculine Italian title appropriate for Ducal rank. We also make the feminine title Dogaressa an official Italian title for the holder of a Duchy.

We do not approve the general use of Doge as a masculine peerage title.

We are pending the submission of Gentle as a gender-neutral English title at the Award or Grant of Arms level for more analysis of the options: for details, see the Letter of Pends and Discussion.

From Ragged Staff: Group Petition of Support Requirements

In recent months, we received several group petitions of support for territorial group names and/or device submissions that have been missing the information required by the Administrative Handbook IV.C.5. Fortunately, the omissions were caught early in the commentary period, giving the groups enough time to obtain correct replacement petitions. Since group petitions may be something that Submission Heralds do not see very often, we would like to review what is required for a valid petition of support.

The Administrative Handbook IV.C.5. sets forth the requirements for a valid petition of support for a group name or group device submission.

A valid name petition must contain: (1) the name being submitted; (2) the name of group making the submission; (3) the date the petition was signed; and (4) the physical (not electronic) signatures of the group's members. Members must sign with their legal names, not their Society names. If the petition has more than one page, the group name and date the petition was signed must be on every page.

A valid device petition must contain: (1) the blazon (heraldic description) and/or emblazon (image) for the group device; (2) the date the petition was signed; and (3) the physical (not electronic) signatures of the group's members. Members must sign with their legal names, not their Society names. If the petition has more than one page, the device blazon and/or emblazon and date must be on every page.

If a group is submitting both name and device at the same time, the same petition of support may be used for both if it has all the required elements. However, a complete copy of the petition should be attached to each item in OSCAR.

A template for a Petition for Registration of Group Name and/or Device can be found on the heraldry website at http://heraldry.sca.org/formletters/standard-branch-petition.pdf

We do not require petitions of support for group badges, order and award names, heraldic titles or guild names. Kingdoms may require petitions for such items, so Submissions Heralds should be sure to check their Kingdom Law.

From Morsulus: Call for Deputies

Morsulus is not looking to step down any time soon, but it would be a Really Good Idea if there were a couple of people who were sufficiently familiar with the job to stand as emergency fill-ins. I am really lousy at delegating and letting go of parts. The duties and functions of these deputies are completely undefined.

What does Morsulus actually do? The primary job is to add the registrations from each Letter of Acceptances and Returns into the Ordinary and Armorial database and index the armory for searching. Other tasks include:

If you have an interest in getting in on the fun, contact me via email at morsulus@heraldry.sca.org. Also, come to KWHSS and sit in on "How Morsulus Does His Job" to learn more about what I do.

West Acceptances - February LoAR

Ahmad ibn Salim al-Hasib. Device. Sable, three armillary spheres argent.

This device does not conflict with the device of Alewijn van Zeebrouck, Sable, three roundels argent. There is a substantial change from a roundel to an armillary sphere; both are period charges, the armillary sphere has many piercings where the field shows through, and it's mounted on a base which extrudes significantly from the round perimeter, substantially decreasing the visual resemblance.

Aine inghean Tuathail ui Ghallchobhair. Device change. Per bend embattled sable and Or.

The submitter's previous device, Vert, a ferret statant argent marked sable and on a chief Or three oak leaves vert, is released.

Nice device!

Annale Breylin. Device. Sable, an open book argent goutty de sang within a serpent in annulo vorant of its tail Or.

Asakura Shiro. Name (see RETURNS for device).

The submitter requested authenticity for 14th-16th century Japanese language or culture. Both name elements are dated to 1572 in Name Construction in Medieval Japan (2nd Ed.). Therefore, this is an authentic feminine name for late 16th century Japanese.

Caleb Maxwell. Device. Per pale azure and argent, a dexter gauntlet clenched counterchanged.

Elisabeth Anne Gray of Crosston. Name (see RETURNS for device).

Submitted as Elisabeth Anne Gray_, this name claimed a relationship with the registered Anne Gray. Because English used unmarked matronymics, a woman whose name was written as Elisabeth Anne Gray could be read as Elisabeth, daughter of Anne Gray. With the submitter's permission, we have added the name of her local branch, Crosston, to eliminate the claim of relationship.

Elisabeth Anne Gray of Crosston. Badge. (Fieldless) A peapod fesswise per pale vert and Or.

Evert of the West. Badge. Quarterly sable and argent, a mullet of eight points, a bordure vert.

Submitted under the name Evert van Eyck de Vriese, that name was returned on the LoAR of December 2017, and he was issued a holding name for his device at that time.

Gerard de Canterbury. Name.

Nice 14th century English name!

Halla in mjóva. Device. Quarterly vert and sable, a Bowen cross within an orle argent.

Helen Margit Dromain. Name and device. Per fess wavy gules and Or, a dragonfly Or and a thistle proper.

Submitted as Helen Margit Droman, the submitter requested the surname Dromain if it could be documented. During the Pelican decision meeting, Ursula Palimpsest found the French surname Dromain in a list of witnesses to a document from 1634. Based on this evidence, we have changed the name to Helen Margit Dromain.

This name combines two English given names with a French surname, an acceptable lingual mix under Appendix C.

Artist's note: Please draw the waves in the line of division with increased amplitude and decreased frequency.

Katherine Grym. Name change from Elizabeth Grym.

Nice Scots name from the late 15th century onwards!

The submitter's previous name, Elizabeth Grym, is retained as an alternate name.

Margaret Grym. Name change from Margaret Graham.

Nice Scots name from the 15th century onwards!

The submitter's previous name, Margaret Graham, is released.

Meash White. Name.

Músa-Valdís Roðbertsdóttir. Name.

Sæmundr Ulfsson. Name.

Tama Katerina Evstokh'eva. Badge. Per pale azure and vert, a clarion Or within a bordure argent.

Tytus the Wayfarer. Name and device. Sable, a lion's head erased Or, a bordure Or pellety.

The submitter requested authenticity for English language or culture. Although this name is registerable, it is not authentic because the name elements are from different time periods. Titus is one of the classical names that was revived in the 16th century in England, the Netherlands and Germany, but the byname the Wayfarer is the lingua Anglica form of any one of several Middle English byames.

Artist's note: Please make fewer and deeper jags on the neck.

Tziporah bas Baruch ben Eliezar. Name and device. Argent, on a hand of Fatima vert a snail shell contourny argent.

Tziporah bas Baruch ben Eliezar. Badge. (Fieldless) On a hand of Fatima vert a snail argent.

William Talemache. Device. Per fess embattled sable and argent, an open book Or and a tree eradicated vert.

Yseult de Michel. Badge. (Fieldless) A chevron couped per pale Or and purpure.

West Returns - February LoAR

Asakura Shiro. Device. Purpure, two tomoe in annulo within a Japanese well-frame argent.

This device is returned for use of two steps from period practice in a single piece of armory. Both tomoe and Japanese well-frames have steps from period practice, as both are non-European heraldic charges. Under SENA, designs that have multiple non-European heraldic charges must be documented as non-European heraldry under the individually attested pattern rules.

Elisabeth Anne Gray of Crosston. Device. Per pale azure and gules, an owl and a domestic cat sejant, a bordure Or.

This device is returned for violation of SENA A6F, which prohibits claims through marshalling of independent armory. With a plain per pale field division, two different types of primary charge, and a peripheral ordinary that has good contrast with both sides of the field, this appears to be a display of the independent pieces of armory Azure, an owl within a bordure Or and Gules, a domestic cat sejant within a bordure Or. We encourage the submitter to review SENA A6F1 for ways to unmistakably avoid the appearance of marshalling.

In Service,
Edith of Swanesdale, PaL,
Matins Herald

SUBMISSONS – March (2018)

ITEMS SENT TO LAUREL
Asakura Shiro (RESUB to Laurel Device sent to Laurel)

The submitter's device: Purpure, two tomoe in annulo within a Japanese well-frame argent was returned on the February, 2018 LoAR with the commentary:

This device is returned for use of two steps from period practice in a single piece of armory. Both tomoe and Japanese well-frames have steps from period practice, as both are non-European heraldic charges. Under SENA, designs that have multiple non-European heraldic charges must be documented as non-European heraldry under the individually attested pattern rules.

The new submission removes the tomoe, clearing this concern. There remains one SFPP for the use of a Japanese well-frame.

Blazon:
Purpure, a Japanese well-frame within an annulet argent.

According to our research, as defined in the Nov. 2009 LoAR a Japanese well-frame DOES NOT conflict with billets or mascles:

Elyn de Hauocmore. Badge. Azure, a mullet voided and interlaced within and conjoined to an annulet argent.

This badge conflicts with the badge Cormac Mór, (Fieldless) A mullet voided and interlaced within and conjoined to an annulet argent, with the badge of Martin Monteyro do Monte, Vert, a mullet voided and interlaced within and conjoined to an annulet argent, and with the badge of Brianna Je Nell Aislynn of Blue Shadows, Azure, a mullet voided and interlaced within and conjoined to an annulet Or, all registered elsewhere on this letter. All three have provided blanket letters of permission to conflict which are accepted elsewhere on this letter.

Due to the visual difference between them, there is a CD for the difference between a mullet of five points and a mullet of five points voided and interlaced. Therefore, this badge does not conflict with the badge of Hans Dürrmast von der Wanderlust, (Fieldless) A mullet of five greater and five lesser points within and conjoined to an annulet argent. There is a CD for the fieldlessness and a CD for the voiding and interlacing. No difference is granted for the removal of the five minor points from Hans' badge.

This does not conflict with the flag of Somalia, Azure, a mullet argent. There is a CD for adding the annulet and a second CD for the voiding and interlacing.

This is not a conflict with the device of Perigrine Mellyrn of the Last Mountain, Azure, a mascle within an annulet argent. Based on the precedent from February 2009, registering the device of Ryuu'zou'ji Kenshin, "Usually, a charge within a mascle or annulet is the primary charge," meaning that the annulets in Perigrine and Elyn's armory are secondary charge groups. Perigrine's primary charge group is a mascle, Elyn's is a mullet, and the devices are clear by X.2.

Three registrations that are close but we believe are clear:

Peregrine Mellyrn of the Last Mountain: The following device associated with this name was registered in February of 1981 (via Atenveldt): Azure, a mascle within an annulet argent.

Tadatsune of Carolingia: The following device associated with this name was registered in February of 2009 (via the East): Azure, a Japanese well-frame crosswise within an annulet argent.

Eleanor d'Autun: (Sept. '88) Vert, a fret couped within an annulet argent.

Dory Malley (NEW Name & Device sent to Laurel)

The submitter cares about the sound (closest to Dory O'Malley) of the name.

Dory -- from NCS FamilySearch: 'Dory Blundell' married Feb 1560, Tonbridge, Kent, England, Batch M00839-1 [https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V5VZ-8Q7].

O'Malley -- As documented by Alys Mackyntoich (Ogress) on AnTir's Feb 2016 LoI, under the submitted name "Thomas O'Malley" (with the submitted documentation: "O'Malley, the anglicized form of Ó Máille, is from [Woulfe] Woulfe, Patrick. Sloinnte Gaedheal is Gall: Irish Names and Surnames; italicized form found on p 109"):

"The italicized forms (i.e., the ones dated to the 16th and early 17th cen.) in Woulfe s.n. Ó Máille are <O Mallie> &;t'O Mailie> <O Mally> and <O Maely>, not the submitted spelling.

However, <Teig Roe O'Malley> is found in 'Elizabeth I: volume 125, August 1586', in Calendar of State Papers, Ireland, 1586-1588, ed. Hans Claude Hamilton (London, 1877), pp. 125-147. British History Online (http://www.british-history.ac.uk/cal-state-papers/ireland/1576-88/pp125-147). Given the renderings of other names in this article, I think there's a fair chance that it's a period spelling."

The English name formation <given + byname> is found in SENA Appendix A.

Armory:
Vert, a cauldron Or, on a chief invected argent two fish azure tailed Or.

According to the PicDic: ANY fish known to Europe in period may be used, but unless it is found in period heraldry it is considered an SFPP. "The blue tang (amongst other names) Acanthurus coeruleus is a surgeonfish found commonly in the Atlantic Ocean. It can grow up to 39 centimetres (15 in) long.[2] Common names include Atlantic blue tang, blue barber, blue doctor, blue doctorfish, blue tang, blue tang surgeonfish, yellow barber, and yellow doctorfish.[1]" [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acanthurus_coeruleus]

Ulfarsson -- found in NCS [Geirr Bassi] Geirr Bassi Haraldsson. The Old Norse Name. p. 15 as 'Úlfarr' with the formation to the patronymic 'Úlfarsson' also from Geirr Bassi.

The Swedish name formation <given + byname> is found in SENA Appendix A.

From SENA Appendix D, the usage of accents and diacritics: either all must be used or none. The submitter used none, so the cited names have had these marks removed for the whole name.

Duncan Graham of Allyshia (NEW Name Change sent to Laurel)

Previously registered Theodore de Hales, August 1983 via the West, to be released upon registration of the new name.

The submitter cares about the language and/or culture (Scottish) and gender (male) of the name.

Duncan -- Found in Names from 13th Century Scottish Parliamentary Records by Alys Mackyntoich (Alissa Pyrich) [http://heraldry.sca.org/names/Namesfrom13thCenturyScottishParliamentaryRecords.html].

Found in NCS [Black] Black, George F. The Surnames of Scotland. p. 228, under the header <Duncan> "Willelmus filius Dunecan 1135, John Duncanson or Dunkanson 1367". And under the header <Duncanson> on the same page "Nicholas Donecandonesoune 1296, William Duncani 1310, Colinus filius Duncani 1316-18, John filius Duncani 1326", etcetera.

The Scots name formation <given + pat + loc> is found in SENA Appendix A.

Edaoin inghean Bhrain (NEW Name Change Sent to Laurel & Device RETURNED)

Previously registered name Caillech inghean Bhrain to be released upon registration.

The submitter will NOT accept MAJOR changes and cares about the language and/or culture (none noted) and the gender (female) of the name.

Edaoin -- from Index of Names in Irish Annals: Étaín / Éadaoin by Mari Elspeth nic Bryan (Kathleen M. O'Brien) 'Edaoin' listed as a feminine given name d. 1104, 1188, 1225, 1263, 1328, 1392, etc. [http://medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnnalsIndex/Feminine/Etain.shtml].

inghean -- correct form for a marked patronymic for a feminine name for Early Modern Gaelic (after c.1200) and Scots Gaelic from SENA Appendix A.

Bhrain -- lenited genitive form of ?Bran? d. 110, 1154, 1361, 1364, etc. from Index of Names in Irish Annals: Bran by Mari Elspeth nic Bryan (Kathleen M. O'Brien) [http://medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnnalsIndex/Masculine/Bran.shtml].

The Gaelic name formation <given + marked patronymic> is found in SENA Appendix A.

The cited website for <Bran, Brain> does NOT show <Bhrain>. The form must have been originally documented from elsewhere. However, that spelling is grandfathered to the submitter through her currently registered name. [SENA PN1.B.2.g. The Existing Registration Allowance].

From the registration of the previous name:

"Submitted as Caillech inghean Bhrain, the patronym was changed in kingdom to inghean Brain to try to match the documentation that could be found. However, the submitted patronym is a post-1200 form that should be lenited per Sharon Krossa's "Quick and Easy Gaelic Names" [http://medievalscotland.org/scotnames/quickgaelicbynames/index.shtml#simplepatronymicbyname]. We have restored the spelling of the byname to the submitted form, which had been lenited, in order to register this name."

Eithne ingen Fiachrach (NEW Name sent to Laurel)

Submitter cares about the language and/or culture (Irish) and gender (female) of the name. Note on documentation paperwork that she specifies a desire for Irish Gaelic 11th C.

Submitted as 'Eithne ingen Fhiachrach', the West Kingdom College of Heralds removed the lenition in 'Fiachrach' to match the submitter's desired early-period name, as lenition is documented to much later period for Gaelic names.

Eithne -- 'Eithne; d.763 - 1016 from Index of Names in Irish Annals: Eithne by Mari Elspeth nic Bryan (Kathleen M. O'Brien) [http://medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnnalsIndex/Feminine/Eithne.shtml].

ingen -- correct form for a marked patronymic for a feminine name in Old/Middle Gaelic (before c.1200) from SENA Appendix A.

Fiachrach -- starting with the masculine nominative form of 'Fiachrae' d. 900-1200, noted as having the genitive form of 'Fiachrach', from Index of Names in Irish Annals: Fiachrae / Fiachra by Mari Elspeth nic Bryan (Kathleen M. O'Brien) [http://medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnnalsIndex/Masculine/Fiachrae.shtml].

The submitter cited the formation of the lenited name as: formed using the same lenition as that shown for the example of 'Fearchar mac Domhnaill' à 'Dearbhorgaill inghean Fhearchair' of adding an 'h' after the initial 'F' in the name from NCS Quick and Easy Gaelic Names Formerly Published as "Quick and Easy Gaelic Bynames" 3rd Edition by Sharon L. Krossa [http://medievalscotland.org/scotnames/quickgaelicbynames/#simplepatronymicbyname].

The Gaelic name formation <given + marked patronymic> is found in SENA Appendix A.

Elisabeth Anne Grey of Crosston (RESUB to Laurel Device sent to Laurel)

Most recent submission for this device (Per pale azure and gules, an owl and a domestic cat sejant, a bordure Or) was returned on the February 2018 LoAR with the commentary:

This device is returned for violation of SENA A6F, which prohibits claims through marshalling of independent armory. With a plain per pale field division, two different types of primary charge, and a peripheral ordinary that has good contrast with both sides of the field, this appears to be a display of the independent pieces of armory Azure, an owl within a bordure Or and Gules, a domestic cat sejant within a bordure Or. We encourage the submitter to review SENA A6F1 for ways to unmistakably avoid the appearance of marshalling.

A previous return on this device (as submitted through Drachenwald) was made on the December 2015 LoAR.

The new submission changes the device from a per-pale field division, commonly used in marshalling, to a per-bend field division, not used in marshalling, thus clearing this concern.

Blazon:
Per bend gules and azure, a cat sejant and an owl within a bordure Or.

TRAINING TIP: What is "marshalling"? Marshalling in heraldry is the practice of taking two or more devices and mashing them together to show a relationship. In period, this was primarily done by splitting a device down the middle and making Side A from one device and Side B from the other. Another common form was to split a field quarterly, putting one device on two quarters (upper left and bottom right quarters) and the other device on the other two quarters (upper right and bottom left). The SCA College of Arms does not allow the registration of devices that give the appearance of marshalling: more information can be found in SENA A.6.F.

Want to show your relationship with someone in the SCA? Both of you register a device, then create a display of a marshalled version of the two. The College will not register it, but it will be not only a great, period-appropriate display but also a period-appropriate way of publicly claiming a relationship.

Emeludt Trost (NEW Name & Device sent to Laurel)

The submitter will NOT accept MAJOR changes and cares about the language and/or culture (note noted) and the gender (female) of the name. The submitter was previously known by the unregistered name `Emeludt MacIver'.

Emeludt -- from 15th-Century German Women's Names by Brian Scott (Talan Gwynek) 'Emeludt' [http://heraldry.sca.org/names/germ15f.html].

Trost -- from Some Early Middle High German Bynames with Emphasis on Names from the Bavarian Dialect Area by Brian M. Scott:

TRÔST: 'help, assistance'; as a byname, 'helper, comforter; guarantor'; NHG Trost.
Chu[o]nrat Trost 12th c.

The German name formation <given + byname> is found in SENA Appendix A.

Armory:
Per chevron purpure and azure, two wings addorsed argent and a trillium inverted argent barbed and seeded proper.

There is an SFPP for the use of a trillium.

TRAINING TIP: Why do I keep seeing 'SFPP' all over, and what does it mean? An 'SFPP' is a 'Step From Period Practice' and "is an element or combination of elements not found in period names or armory that we nonetheless allow. While this is mostly used in terms of armory, it may also appear in older precedents on names. In older rulings this same concept may also be described as a weirdness." (SCA College of Arms, Admin Handbook).

Additionally, an SFPP is ALWAYS noted during registration, as only one SFPP is allowed per item. For consulting heralds, we like to make sure that the client understands that, while acceptable to the College, an SFPP does mean that their submission is slightly removed from an authentic-to-period design.

Guillelm de Gévaudan (NEW Name sent to Laurel)

The submitter cares about the language and/or culture (12th C. French) of the name.

Guillelm -- from Languedoc Names circa 1300 by Arval Benicoeur (Josh Mittleman), listed under the Latin 'Guillemus' with the spellings Guillelm, Guillem, Guilhem, Guilhelme, Guillen, and Guilleme [https://www.s-gabriel.org/names/arval/toulouse/].

de Gévaudan - French locative, 'de' per SENA Appendix A, 'Gévaudan' an ancient region in France that was absorbed into Languedoc in 1306 [https://www.britannica.com/place/Gevaudan].

Armory:
Argent, two palets azure on a bend overall vert three four-petaled flowers argent.

TRAINING TIP: This name is documented as a masculine name, but the submitter identifies as feminine. Why is this acceptable? The Heralds of the SCA do not care what any individual's gender preference is. So long as the submitted name matches with the expressed gender orientation (there are boxes on the form that can be filled out, they are NOT required), and as long as the name itself is documentable, consistent across the name on gender, or otherwise acceptable via the rules of the SCA College of Arms, we are happy to register any name to any individual.

Lisette la Serena (NEW Device sent to Laurel)

Azure, an increscent argent and a lotus blossom in profile Or.

TRAINING TIP: Why specific 'a lotus blossom in profile'? Because 'a lotus blossom affronty' is also an acceptable charge and neither has been defined as the default.

The Old Norse name formation <given + pat> is found in SENA Appendix A.

From SENA Appendix D, the usage of accents and diacritics: either all must be used or none. In this submission, the submitter chose to use the accents and diacritics.

Sólveig Brúnsdottir (NEW Name Change sent to Laurel)

Previously registered 'Eilionair Nic Griogair', April 1997 via the West, to be retained as an alternate upon registration of the new name.

The submitter will NOT accept MAJOR changes and cares about the language and/or culture (Old Norse Viking 10th-11th century) and the gender (female) of the name.

Sólveig -- - from NCS Viking Names found in Landnámabók by Aryanhwy merch Catmael (Sara L. Uckelman) under the section 'Feminine names found 5 or fewer times' [http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/norse/landnamabok.html].

Brúnsdottir - from NCS Geirr Bassi 'Brúnn' p.9. On p.17, Geirr Bassi writes that names ending in '-nn' are adjusted to the genitive by changing the '-nn' to '-ns' and adding the appropriate marker: 'Brúnn' becomes 'Brúnsdóttir'.

Per SENA Appendix A, when forming Scandinavian names, either all or none of the accent markers must be used. The submitter has chosen to submit the accented 'Sólveig Brúnsdottir'.

The Old Norse formation <given + patronymic> is found in SENA Appendix A.

Tellina di Giuseppe da Fiesole (NEW Name & Device sent to Laurel)

The submitter cares about the language and/or culture (Early Italian Renaissance) of the name.

Per SENA Appendix A, 'di' is the correct article for a marked patronymic and 'da' is the correct article for a marked locative in northern and central Italy.

The Italian name formation <given + patronymic + locative> is found in SENA Appendix A.

Armory:
Azure, a talbot sejant argent dexter forepaw resting on a clew of yarn and in chief a kitchen knife fesswise reversed Or.

TRAINING TIPS: Do we have to specify which of the dog's forelimbs in maintaining the object? According to previous registrations, this detail is specified in the blazon.

What object is this dog maintaining and what does it conflict with? This object is a ball of yarn, which we sometimes call a 'clew of yarn' for the sake of a cant, as found in the canting arms of Navaes or Novais (per the PicDic). A ball of yarn is granted no difference from a roundel.

This device uses a 'kitchen knife' that, while it conflicts with swords, daggers, etc., is a period charge.

Special APRIL LoI

The PENDED item from March 2018 was updated and included in an April LoI after the required documentation was provided:

Bjarnarstrǫnd (Bjarnarstr{o,}nd)

Incipient Canton of the Barony of Winter's Gate.

The submitter cares about the meaning (none noted) of the name.

Bjarnarstrǫnd. Incipient Canton of the Barony of Winter's Gate, Principality of Oertha, Kingdom of the West.

Prefix + Suffix Bjarn(ar)+Strǫnd 'Bear Coast' in Old Norse.

Bjarnar -- Bjarn - Bear 'The name elements Bjarn- and Bjorn- (both meaning "bear") are derived from the same Primitive Scandinavian language roots: over time, and following certain linguistic rules, languages change, and the two forms seem to be the result of a series of changes resulting in similar forms. For the second element -geirr see above. Runic examples include the nominative form biarngaiR and the accusative form biarnkir. A short form of masculine names in Bjarn- or -bjorn is Bjarni.' [http://vikinganswerlady.com/ONMensNames.shtml#Bjarn]

Mens' names that end in -biörn ('bear') or -örn ('eagle') change form slightly in the genitive becoming -biarnar and -arnar. [http://sagamap.hi.is/is/ -- search Bjarn -- many placenames: Bjarnarstaðir, Bjarnarhöfn, etc.]

-strǫnd -- strǫnd (noun f.) 'border, edge, coast, shore' p.205 Example: Hákarlastrond -- in Bergen, Norway (1) [http://skaldic.abdn.ac.uk/db.php]. Holmastrand Old Norse spelling of the town Holmestrand in Norway

Armory:
Sable, two bears combatant argent, in base a laurel wreath and on a chief Or a spear fesswise sable.

RETURNS

Aegir (NEW Name & Device RETURNED)

The submitter will NOT accept ANY changes, and cares about the gender (male) of the name.

Aegir -- no documentation provided.

Armory:
Per chevron inverted (?) azure and sable, an octopus(?) Or and two tridents (crossed at the base?) Or.

There are a number of reasons why this name and device must be returned. The College suggests that the submitter contact us for further consultation on both his name and device.

First, the name only consists of one element, the registration of such being strictly forbidden by the current rules of the SCA College of Arms: SENA PN.2.B "Name Phrase Requirements: A registerable personal name must be made up of at least two name phrases: a given name and at least one byname (which may appear to be a second given name)." Further, the name 'Aegir' appears to be the name of a Norse mythological figure for which the West Kingdom College of Heralds could find no documentation of use by any person within Period: another requirement.

Because the name is returned, and the submitter has no other current name registration, the device must also be returned. As an administrative note, the submitter did not provide a line-drawing of his device, which is a requirement for registration. Additionally, the College notes several design elements of this device submission that would themselves generate a return: the field division does not match any of those defined by the SCA CoA, but instead appears to be halfway between 'per chevron inverted' and 'a pile'. Next, the creature depicted on the device can neither be described as 'a polypus' (closest match to the body) nor 'a calamarie', because of the arrangement of the tentacles.

On the subject of how to draw calamarie and polypus, from the May 2015 LoAR:

"A precedent from 2012 states:

The tentacles of a polypus should be to base, not both to base and to chief, as we grant difference for tentacles to base, as with a polypus, versus tentacles to chief, as with a calamarie. [James Bacon, 12/12, R-West]

This precedent seems to be occasionally misinterpreted as meaning that a correct depiction would have the tentacles pointing towards the base for a polypus and towards the chief for a calamarie. This is incorrect. The intent is to render the orientation unambiguous and thus the tentacles should be arranged in both cases around the section of the cephalopod that is opposite the head, with less than half going over the midsection and none going further than the head itself."

Finally, between the name being that of a sea jötunn, and the clearly sea-themed device, the College feels that the combination creates a claim that the submitter is the mythological 'Aegir', and such claims are strictly forbidden by the SCA College of Arms.

Edaoin inghean Bhrain (NEW Name Change Sent to Laurel & Device RETURNED)

Per bend checky Or and gules, and azure.

Conflict found: Per bend gules and azure. Badge, registered to D'vorah bint Da'ud, Sept. 2015 via Caid.

For Field-Primary armory (armory with no primary charge group including peripheral ordinaries), according to SENA NPN.5.A.5.F, a Substantial Difference is required, and is defined two ways: Substantial Change of Partition (does not apply here, as both are per-bend), or Substantial Change of Tincture (either no tinctures in common or a divided field with a change of tincture in all sections). Per bend checky Or and gules, and azure compared with Per bend gules and azure has a change to half of one divide of the field (checky Or and gules vs. simply gules), but no change with the other half of the field (azure vs. azure). Therefor this is a conflict and must be returned to the submitter for further work.

TRAINING TIP: for field-only heraldry, reference SENA A.5.F Standards for Difference through a Single Substantial Change of Field for Field-Primary Armory

Lúcás mac Conmáel (NEW Name & Device NOT PROCESSED)

The submitter cares about the language and/or culture (11th C. Norse occupied Scotland) and the gender (male) of the name.

Lúcás -- from Index of Names in Irish Annals: Lúcás by Mari Elspeth nic Bryan (Kathleen M. O'Brien) 'Lúcás' listed as a masculine given name d. 1291, 1322, 1323, 1394, 1401, 1416, 1434 [http://medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnnalsIndex/Masculine/Lucas.shtml].

mac -- correct form for a marked patronymic for Scots Gaelic from SENA Appendix A.

Conmáel -- 'Conmáel' listed as both the nominative and genitive form d. 710, 737, 800, 863, 865, 931, 933, 980 from Index of Names in Irish Annals: Conmáel by Mari Elspeth nic Bryan (Kathleen M. O'Brien) [http://medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnnalsIndex/Masculine/Conmael.shtml].

The Gaelic name formation <given + marked patronymic> is found in SENA Appendix A.

This name and device were not processed for consideration as the submissions fees were not received prior to the meeting. However, the College did review them on the Internal LoI and provide to the submitter the following feedback for consideration:

No conflict was found at this time for the name. However, the citations, while using the diacritical marks and accents on the headers, do not actually cite any listed names with those marks. Because of this, the College recommends that the submitter remove these marks and instead submit 'Lucas mac Conmael', which is the form documented by his citations.

Armory:
Per saltire Or and vert, a boar rampant contourny sable.

A conflict WAS found for the device: Murdoch Bayne. The following badge associated with this name was registered in July of 2013 (via AEthelmearc): (Fieldless) A boar rampant contourny sable.

There is 1 DC for the Field/Fieldless, but 2 are required for registration.

Possible suggestions to clear this conflict (although they would have to be checked against other potential conflicts): add a Sable border. Make the critter multi-colored (per fess half red/blue whatever). The College recommends that the submitter reach out and consult with a herald prior to completing his submissions.

And, not a conflict, but an interesting swap of the tinctures:
Bartholomew Marchant of Studley Green. The following device associated with this name was registered in August of 1995 (via the East): Sable, a boar rampant contourny checky Or and vert.
