SUBMISSONS -- 17 May, XLIV (2009)
ITEMS SENT TO LAURELDonald MacMillan - New Name, New Device
Donald: based on Withycombe, p. 86, under header Donald. Donaldus Sturmyn (1346).Sable, a chevron and in base a vair bell argent.
Black has a [Donald Ka] dated 1399 (s.n. Kay, p.387).
Fiametta Margherita del Sanguigno - New Name, New Device (both resubmissions to Kingdom)
Per chevron gules and Or, two gouttes and a foxglove, slipped and leaved, counter-changed.
Fiametta: "Italian Renaissance Women's Names [http://heraldry.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/italian.html]
Margharita: "Italian Renaissance Women's Names [http://heraldry.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/italian.html]
del Sanguigno: Derived from <Sanguigni> in the list of family names in the Online Tratte of Office Holders, 1282-1532 [http://www.stg.brown.edu/projects/tratte] First choice "del Sanguigno", Second choice "Sanguentini". Although this variarion of Sanguigni isn't listed in the Tratte, the discussion in the second paragraph gives an example of a surname <Capponi> which was also sometimes rendered <Del Cappone>. The Tratte lists a single instance of <Sanguigno> in its list of first names.
There are examples in the Catasto of names that are used with both an <-i> and an <-o> ending, including
<Bonaiuti>/<Bonaiuto>, <Manni>/<Manno>, <Mattei>/<Matteo>.
Fiametta Margharita del Sanguigno - New Badge
(Fieldless) A spoon argent , environed of a snake palewise Or.
Godric of Castlemont - New Name, New Device
Godric: St Gabriel Report 072. Withycombe. Common in England prior to Norman Conquest. Died out in 13th and 14th centuries.Gules, upon a plate, an orle of pellets, a bordure argent, pellety.
Because that is an older report, we are supplying additional documentation.
Withycombe (s.n. Godric) cites <Godric(us)> from the Domesday Book.Reaney & Wilson (s.n. Goodrich) cite <Godric> from the Domesay Book and <Ralph Godric'> from 1199.
Castlemont: St Gabriel Report 072. Typical Norman place-name. "Castle" and "mont" were introduced into the English language by the Normans. Castlemont plausible English place-name after Norman Conquest. "de" instead of "of" most likely for this period, but some examples of "of" have been found. "Godric of Castlemont plausible for 1100-1350 C.E. in England.
For <Castle->, Ekwall cites <Castelforde> (1155-8, s.n. Castleford), <Castelrig> (1256, s.n. Castlerigg), and <Castelton> (1246 & 1577, s.n. Castleton), showing the element used in combinations. Reaney & Wilson also cite a <Thomas Castleford> (1375, s.n. Castleford), showing that the modern spelling entered into such combinations in period. The OED states that <castle> entered English twice, first from Latin <castellum> 'village' or <castrum> 'camp', and then again from French in the sense of a fortified building. In the latter sense the plural spelling <castles> cited from 1154.
For <-mont>, Ekwall cites <Bealmont> (1175-80, s.n. Beaumont), <Egremont> (c1125, s.n. Egremont), and <Rugeomont> (1260, s.n. Ridgmont). In each of these the first element derives from French.
It seems within the realm of possibility that <Castlemont> could have been used as an English placename as early as the 1100s.
As for the <of>, Reaney & Wilson cite <Adam of Roston> (1240, s.n. Roston), so it's at least possible although <de>
is far more typical for the period when both <Godric> and <Castlemont> might have co-existed.
Katherine d'Aquitaine - New Name & New Device
While the submitter has marked the form as a resubmission, the previous submission was in the Midrealm and she had never heard anything about the outcome. Lacking evidence that it was submitted to Laurel, we are presenting it as a new submission.Per pale gules and sable, a griffin segreant contourny and a bordure rayonny Or.
Katherine: 5 instances in French Names from Paris, 1421, 1423, & 1438, by Aryanhwy merch Catmael, at: http://heraldry.sca.org/names/french/paris1423.html.

Aquitaine: the name of an ancient province in France (Encyclopedia Britannica, 1911). Originally <Aquitania>, about the time of Julius Caesar, it was in the form <Aquitaine> by the time the area was made a new duchy somewhat earlier than 845 C.E.

Owen: Withycombe (3rd ed), p. 237 (s.n. Owen) cites <Owen> from 1200, 1273, and 1492.
Flechyr: Black (1st ed), p. 268. (s.n. Fletcher) cites <John Flechyr> from 1338. Black further notes that the name derives from
Old French via English barons, lending further support to its combination with a given name cited from English.
