Crowns and Coronets of the West Kingdom

Date Written: vaguely sometime in 2000

Author: Hirsch von Henford, with many donations of photos from across the West Kingdom

Policy Level: Informational
Intended Audience: General Populace
Abstract: Originally published on Hirsch's personal website, added to the Heralds' Handbook as an unofficial guide to the Crowns and Coronets of the Known World, rather thank linking there. This was trimmed down in 2024 to just the West Kingdom, as it became harder and harder to keep on top of what the other 19 Kingdoms are doing.

This is an attempt to make it possible to see what the official Crowns and Coronets from all of the Kingdoms, Principalities, and Baronies of the West look like. Where there are multiple sets of Crowns/Coronets, either still in use, or Historic and archived, it would be great to have photos of all versions.

Note: The photographs used here are with the explicit permission of the photographers involved. Please do not assume that you can use them for your own purposes without contacting the photographers first.

Need Photos of: The Leather Crowns

1 The Crowns created by Henrik of Havn, AS X. These Crowns are being retired as they are becoming fragile, and are to be used only for Coronations (and may be referred to as "The Coronation Crowns").
2 Crowns of the King and Queen of the West, 2012 were created with the idea that the "old" Silver Crowns made by Henrik of Havn in AS X are in serious need of repair, but the Sovereign and Consort would want something to wear while they were being fixed. Mark von dem Falkensfenn and Diane de Winchester made these Crowns (on commission), which were presented at 12th Night Coronation to the Sovereign and Consort. The "old" crowns will be refurbished and retired, most likely to be worn for Coronations and special events (such as an A.S. 75 event).
3 These coronets (the one for the Consort/Crown Princess was same design but smaller) disappeared, to be replaced by a new set by Brion of Bellatrix in March, 2022.
4 The "new" Crowns of the West by Ugo Serrano (2018) were commissioned through a "bidding" process, and completed in the Fall of 2018.
5 The Iron Crown used for the Coronation of King Henrik, more details can be found on the West Kingdom History website. This is the first Crown used to Crown a King in the SCA.
6 Details and more photos of can be found on the West Kingdom History website.
7 The Lace Crowns were created by Mistress Ella du Vergne, are almost never worn because, well, they are lace, and delicate. The idea was to have something lighter to wear, but only a few Kings and Queens of the West have worn them.

8 When the Coronets for the heirs (Crown Prince/ss) "disappeared", Brion of Bellatrix created, in about a month, this new set for the March, 2022 Crown Tournament.

1 This coronet was created many years ago by Gad Waldbär, and was used for the "Teufelberg Champion". It disappeared for some time, and resurfaced in time for Wargy, held by Teufelberg in February 2024, and was given to the new champion then. The reason for the "forks" is that the arms of Teufelberg features a trident, so this is the "Trident Coronet".

1 The Coronet of the Consort is the same but a little smaller.
2 The emerald was added by Prince Alrik in his first reign to the Sovereign's Wood Coronet.
3 3rd Set of Coronets -- The Sovereign's and Consort's coronets have the swans facing each other, with the taller one being the Sovereign's coronet.

1 These were made by Titus of Wormwood. The acorn was carved out of wood from our namesake tree (the Hooker Oak which was struck by lightning, hence "Riven" Oak) as one piece, then cut in half and mounted on each Coronet. They were commissioned by our first Baron.

The Coronets of the Lord/Lady/Laird Borealis, the Principality heirs, are made for each reign, and kept by the victors of the tourney and their consorts. There is no "standardized" coronet.

Be nice to have a photo of:
The (Original) Coronet of the Consort of Oertha, although they are very similar, with the Consort's being slightly smaller than the Sovereign's.

1 The "New Coronets" were created by Skygge Newcombe and Styrkarr Jarlsskald and presented at Purgatorio/Oertha Coronet, August, 2017 (A.S. LII).
2 The Original coronets of Oertha, worn since 1985, made by Hans the Horrible in time for Oertha's first Coronet Tournament, January, 1985 (AS XIX), and were first worn by Kylson and Anne, the first Sovereign and Consort of Oertha.

1.4 The Marches The Marches of the West are branches that do not belong in a Principality. There are no arms, no other official aspect to the collective called "The Marches". It is more a convenient way to discuss these branches as a whole.
1.4.1 Marches -- Barony of Allyshia Current:
